Rukia's encounter with Ichigo in his bedroom while Hollow-hunting is the trigger for the story. Upon losing the fight with the Hollow, she transfers her power to Ichigo to save his family. She forces him to act as a Soul Reaper in her stead until she is hauled back to Soul Society for illegally empowering Ichigo.

* ActionGirl: She's an effective hand-to-hand fighter and kido user, as well as highly self-reliant, even without her Soul Reaper powers.

For example, after she killed Aaroniero, she was so badly injured that she collapsed and couldn’t defend herself when Zommari arrived to finish what Aaroniero started, but was saved by Byakuya before he could attack her.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: She worshipped her mentor, Kaien Shiba. However, when Kaien was taken over by an experimental Hollow, she was forced to kill Kaien to save both herself and her captain. She was unable to forgive herself for decades until Ichigo gave her the chance to face up to her past, make peace with herself and apologise to Kaien's family for what happened.

* HarmlessFreezing: Rukia's Shikai initially appears to freeze opponents, resulting in Grimmjow breaking free of her ice by claiming her attempt to freeze just the top layer of his skin isn't enough to hurt him. As Nodt is similarly dismissive of her when she uses her new Royal Guard-empowered Shikai, although her Bankai averts this trope by being a danger to both her opponents and herself.
