* DeadlyDecadentCourt: The royal court is full of backstabbing, and Ganishka was only able to become emperor by killing several of his own family members.
* TheEmpire: An expansionist state with a huge military that takes over and ensalves other countries, it is rule by an emperor who wants to TakeOverTheWorld.
* InterserviceRivalry: The other elements of the Kushan army look down on the Bakiraka Clan, who were driven from the empire because they supported the deposed former ruling family, while Silat is determined not to give up the chance to capture Griffith and win back his clan's freedom. Locus explains to Mule that the Kushan are made of multiple factions brought together by force, and that their internal divisions can be exploited.
* MadeASlave:
** Slavery exists in the Kushan Empire, and it might not be too much to say that every person beneath the emperor is a slave in some fashion.
** As Schierke finds out in Vritannis, the countries in the Holy Alliance also enslave Kushan people and treat them horribly. When Vritannis is designated as the capital of the alliance against the Kushan Empire, all the adult Kushan slaves in the city are hanged as a scapegoat and their children rounded up to be sold elsewhere.
* TheMagocracy: While it may not have always been this way, with Ganishka in charge and Daiba as his right-hand wizard the empire is ruled by those with magical powers.
* MillionMookMarch: The Kushan invade Midland and the neighboring countries with seemingly endless battalions of soldiers arranged in neat formation. The defenders of Virtannis despair at the display of force outside the walls, estimating there must be hundreds of thousands.
* PunchClockVillain: While the leaders and officers are depicted as cruel, many of the rank and file foot soldiers are implied to be JustFollowingOrders or afraid of what their superiors will do to them if they don't obey.
* RapePillageAndBurn: The Kushan are cruel and rapacious conquerors who take whatever they can use and destroy what they can't.
* ReligionOfEvil: The religion the Kushan practice seems to involve a lot of PoweredByAForsakenChild and HumanSacrifice.

* SlaveMooks: The War Slaves are captured enemies of the empire forced to fight in the front line, lest they be killed by the troops behind them for trying to desert. They will either kill or be killed by their own countrymen, which the Kushan use to break the enemy's will to fight.
* WeHaveReserves: Ganishka's military machine is based on sheer manpower, and his commanders will typically first send in the [[SlaveMooks war slaves]] as CannonFodder before the regulars overwhelm the enemy with discipline and numbers. His regular soldiers are treated better than the war slaves, but when push comes to shove he will sacrifice as many of them as he has to in order to win.

* InformedAttribute: To become an Apostle one most sacrifice someone he truly cared about, Ganishka however didn't seem to give that much affection to [[spoiler: his son, which he had for the sake of tradition and not for love]] and was too afraid of betrayal to let anyone close to him.

Before his transformation, he was a pious warrior who crusaded against heretics for the Vatican. He had a beautiful wife, who together with their precious daughter Theresa was dearer to him than life itself. Accounts differ about what he was really like as a ruler. His former physician Vargas recounts that he was cruel but at least human, while Theresia claims that he was harsh but fair, and that he was loved and respected by his people. Whatever the case, he truly believed in his holy cause and loved his happy family. However, Theresia's mother was killed--according to Theresia, by Heretics who were attempting to blackmail the Count--and he was never the same again. Reborn a cruel and greedy DarkLord with an obese human form and the true form of a giant, hideous slug with a human face, he uses heretic hunting as a mere excuse to imprison, torture, and execute people regardless of guilt or innocence. Despite his underling Dahl's concern that this campaign of torture and execution will attract the condemnation of the Pope, he orders it to continue. He performs sick experiments on captives, dismembering and devouring their flesh. Among his victims were Vargas and his family. During the Golden Age arc he appears before Rickert as one of the Apostles feasting on the members of the Band of the Hawk who stayed behind during the rescue operation, and during the Eclipse he attempts to set a trap for Guts with Pippin's corpse and is seen eating it afterward.

Meanwhile, the Count has not allowed Theresia to leave her room in the past seven years since her mother died. He provides for her comfort as much as he can, but tells her that the world outside is full of dangerous heretics and refuses to let anyone even connected with the city see her. Despite the loss of most of his humanity he still loves her as much as ever, and is deeply hurt by her fear of him. He wants to protect her from the truth of what he has become and what happened to her mother at all costs.

Guts has a difficult time dealing with the Count and his minions. By giving his Guard Captain, Zondark, a parasite that enables him to use the Count's powers and regenerate himself, he delays Guts considerably before he figures out how to defeat the parasite. When Guts finally reaches him in the audience chamber he turns into his horrible slug form, and almost destroys Guts. However, Theresia's sudden appearance distracts the Count and allows Guts to use her as a human shield, blasting the Count with his ArmCannon and slicing his human face from his giant slug body. Guts sadistically tortures the Count in front of Theresea with his dagger, but the Count's blood touches the Behelit and they are all transported to the dimension where the five members of the Godhand dwell.

[[spoiler: The Godhand offers the Count a choice that will allow him to keep living: to make another sacrifice, who will be doomed to suffering in the sea of souls in his place. Immediately he volunteers Guts, but he is informed that besides having already been branded Guts is nothing but an enemy to the Count. They want him to sacrifice his precious Theresia to them, and in order to convince him Ubik opens up the past so both the Count and Theresia can see exactly what happened seven years ago. In truth, the Count came home early from a campaign one day to find his wife in the middle of a pagan orgy with the figure of a heretical demon. Enraged, he killed the heretics and tried to kill his wife, but found that he could not bring himself to do it. The Godhand appeared before him to offer him a form in which he could feel no pain or despair, and in exchange he sacrificed his beloved wife to them. Femto and the others urge him offer his daughter as a sacrifice so he can live on, reminding him that his fate is eternal suffering if he refuses. Even so, the Count allows his love of Theresia to overcome his fear of dying. As soon as the sacrifice is refused he is dragged into the vortex of souls by the vengeful spirits of all his victims, including Vargas, and when Guts, Puck, and Theresia return to reality there is nothing left of him but part of his mangled corpse.]]

* OurAngelsAreDifferent: Despite looking demonic they are referred to as Five Angels. [[spoiler:And this isn't inaccurate, as they can be seen as the angels to the Idea of Evil's God.]]

* OurDemonsAreDifferent: Quite different from the Apostles and ''much more'' powerful, even if they're created in much the same way.
* DevilButNoGod: Although it's shown that there are other powerful beings in the astral plane, the Godhand [[spoiler:and their master, the Idea of Evil,]] still have no counterpart in their role as malevolent deities. If anything, it is made apparent that [[spoiler:the Idea of Evil is the only god around, turning the situation downright into GodIsEvil.]]

* LaughablyEvil: Despite all the terrifying things he's responsible for, he's one of ''Berserk'''s few comic villains, an absurd-looking LargeHam with equally absurd mannerisms who the story pokes fun at on multiple occasions. It says a lot about him that while most enemies Guts has killed tend to be memorialised as fearsome, terrifying spectres, he shows up again in a bizarre dream sequence for Farnese as a stern but friendly piece of laundry equipment.
