The original anime, and the movie made from it, was based on a series of children's books called, oddly enough, Literature/SerendipityBooks. Each book was designed to deliver AnAesop, such as "[[BeYourself Enjoy being you,]]" [[TheGoldenRule "Treat others the way you want to be treated,"]] and "Not everyone enjoys the same things."

* NowWhichOneWasThatVoice: The anime's English dub does credit actors at the beginning, but never stated who voiced which character. Worse is that many of the names lead to no one. The only close actor is Michael Sorich who voiced Smudge due to his voice being similar to Morton from Swiss Family Robinson.
