A long time ago, a little forest guardian known as Celebi is chased by an unknown Pokémon poacher. A young Trainer, Sam, saves Celebi, and the two travel through time. In the present day, a member of Team Rocket, known as the Iron Masked Marauder ("Vicious" in Japanese), confronts the now-old poacher and destroys his home, taking a Tyranitar with him.

** In all honesty, the fact that the movie leaves a few hints scattered throughout and that the second movie revealed [[spoiler: the full name of Professor Samuel Oak]] should've made this fact a little easier to figure out.
*** When the 4Kids guys first watched the movie, they weren't completely sure if [[spoiler: Sam was Prof. Oak or not]]. Once they confirmed it, they added hints and the said scenes.

* {{Fridge Brilliance}}: In the beginning of the movie (40 years from the present), the poacher that was hunting down Celebi had a Scyther. Guess what Dark Celebi's monster looks like?
** While traveling with Ash and co., the viewers see that Sammy has a passion for keeping track of all the different Pokémon he encounters in his sketchbook, and once they realize that Sammy is [[spoiler: Prof. Oak]], it finally makes sense where the idea for the invention of the Pokédex came from.

** In this universe, apparently Pokéballs have been around for a great many years. The time traveling kid from forty years ago has them with the only noticeable difference between his versions and modern versions is that his has to be unscrewed to operate rather than them be automatic. And here the assumption was that turning living things into light was the hard part. Apparently it's getting that automatic open/closing feature that took all the brainpower.

* [=~Hey, It's That Voice!~=]: Other than KoichiYamadera making a brief appearance as the poacher in the original, the English dub has {{Dan Green}} as the Iron Masked Marauder, which would be his final major film role for the Pokémon series until ''[=~Pokémon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life~=]''. Not to mention [[{{Yu-Gi-Oh}} Tara Jayne/Sands]] as the dub voice of Sam.
