* GirlsNeedRoleModels:
** The Fionna and Cake episodes are much more dedicated to supplying morals that the younger girls of the audience need to hear, with the first about not needing a guy and the second about dealing with self-proclaimed bad boys.
** Princess Bubblegum is a deliberate subversion of most PrincessClassic tropes. She doesn't care for romantic advances and prefers science and her kingdom over romance.

* GrowingWithTheAudience: A textbook example. As the original audience for the first season grew up, the show became increasingly [[DarkerAndEdgier mature]] and continuity-heavy.

* {{Foreshadowing}}: In [[spoiler:the Ice King's genderbent fanfic]] "Fiona and Cake", when Cake joking puts on the Ice Queen's crown Fiona immediately smacks it away, yelling, "No! You might catch her crazy!". In "Holly Jolly Secrets Part II", it is revealed that [[spoiler:the Ice King's crown is what caused his insanity]].

* EyebrowWaggle: In the episode "Bad Little Boy," both the Ice King and Marcelline do this at various points. The Ice King's is meant to have a lecherous tone, but considering who it is and how it's done it's more funny than anything. Marcelline's is purely for humor as she's poking fun at the Ice King.

* DisasterDominoes: [[spoiler:Surprisingly averted in "Apple Wedding, despite all the pieces being there like Cinnamon Bun shaking up the bottle of apple cider and Finn trying to prevent LSP from crashing the wedding. The only thing that amounts to anything is Princess Bubblegum hijacking the King of Ooo's balloon.]]

** The series as a whole has become much darker. While theres still loony silliness all around, there are way more melancholic undertones to the show than before. Compare a recent episode to one of the earlier ones which featured candy parties and thawed out businessman.

** In season 6's "Breezy," Finn explores the darkness of lust to search for a warm feeling he's lost. It's exactly what it sounds like.

to:

*** For that matter, any episode where [[{{KnightOfCerebus}} The Lich]] is directly involved will go through a severe shift in tone. The stakes are [[{{TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt}} much higher]] [[{{OmnicidalManiac}} than usual]], the NightmareFuel gets cranked up a lot, and previously established characters may actually ''[[HeroKiller die]]''.
