With all due respect (and I'm sure it sucks, you have my pity), I would prefer if a certain troper would stop complaining about his family here. Thank you!
Charred Knight: I can't even understand what the hell his even talking about. I understand having problems with your family, I have been having problems with mine, but I saw that I was taking it out on people here, so I learned to express my feelings in a more productive way. You need to do that, instead of trying to readd shit no one wants to hear.
Peteman: I don't think V's disintegration of Kubota counts, given that V hadn't really heard the whole speech and killed him because he felt it would be more convenient.
Medinoc: You may have a point here.
Medinoc: Does Ash's "Good, bad, I'm the one with the gun" count ? I didn't get the chance to see the movie, so...
Peteman: I don't think these aren't examples of Shut Up, Hannibal!-s. One is Why Don't Ya Just Shoot Him?, and the other is the Hero giving a Hannibal Lecture himself.
Mal tries one of these in Serenity:
- The Operative: I want to resolve this like civilized men. I'm not threatening you. I'm unarmed.Mal: Good. *Bang!*
- At the end of the film he does it with considerably greater success simply by showing The Operative exactly what he has been fighting for.
I think the better example would be when Inara set off the flashbomb to distract the Operative.

ThisGuy: Removed the Tabletop Games example. Based on the explanatory link, "Fuck You, Strake!" is a more appropriate fit for Off the Rails than a Shut Up, Hannibal!
Caswin: Claire's "You are" is Narm? Sorry, but speaking as one who has gotten tired of Heroes myself, it sounds like a stretch to laugh at the sheer ridiculousness of it.
Vampire Buddha: Removed these two examples, because they're the exact opposite of what the trope describes (09:59 GMT, 27/5/2009):
- Death Note: When Light Yagami delivers his Motive Rant at the end of the anime about how his actions have reduced the crime rate and stopped all wars, how does his nemesis respond?
Near": No. You're just a murderer, Light Yagami. And this notebook is the deadliest weapon in the history of mankind. If you had been a normal person and had used this notebook once out of curiosity, you would have been surprised and scared of what had happened, regretted what you had done, and never used this notebook again. To speak of extremes, I can actually understand those who would use this notebook for their personal interests and kill a couple of people, and even think that they're normal. But you yielded to the power of the notebook and the Shinigami and have confused yourself with a god. In the end, you're nothing more than a crazy serial killer. That's all you are.
- In the same episode, Matsuda's response to the same rant was to shoot Light five times. Okay, that was actually his response to Light's last-ditch attempt to kill Near, but considering that Matsuda was the closest person on the task force to supporting Kira, not to mention someone who genuinely seemed to like and admire Light, it was pretty impressive. In retrospect, it probably was a bad idea for Light to refer to his late father Soichirou, who was Matsuda's mentor and idol, as a fool during the rant.
- In the manga, when Ed confronts Greed's gang after they kidnapped Al, Greed explains that it was all for the sake of an "equivalent exchange". Greed will explain how to make a homunculus if Ed explains how he transmuted his brother's soul. A fair trade, as both are interested in "making bodies", right? Ed's response? "DON'T MAKE ME LAUGH! HOW DARE YOU, YOU CROOK?! ARE YOU REALLY THAT STUPID?! I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU AND THE OTHER MEMBERS OF THE OURORBOROS ARE SCHEMING, BUT YOU KIDNAPPED MY BROTHER AND HURT MY TEACHER! AND NOW YOU WANT AN "EQUIVALENT EXCHANGE"?! YOU ARE WITHOUT A DOUBT, THE VILEST CREATURE ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH! YOU WANNA KNOW ABOUT SOULS?! I'M NOT GONNA TELL YOU ANYTHING! I'LL CRUSH YOU CREEPS, I'LL SMASH YOU! IF I WANT YOUR SECRETS, I'LL FORCE YOU TO TELL ME! IN OTHER WORDS, I'M TAKING IT ALL AND GIVING YOU NOTHING! I'LL NEVER MAKE AN EQUIVALENT EXCHANGE WITH VILLAINS LIKE YOU!"
Caswin: I've never watched the second one, but how is Death Note "the exact opposite" of the villain self-righteously explaining how he's in the right and his enemy is a misguided fool for fighting against him, at which point he gets smacked across the face with the truth? Sounds spot-on to me.
Caswin: I'm putting the Death Note one back, since I've seen that one and I know it's not "the exact opposite" of what this page is about.
Caswin: Deleting the big Doctor Who example. That's not a Shut Up, Hannibal!, that's just defying the villain. I'm not sure about the "Genesis" example, either — The Doctor's example doesn't sound like much of a Hannibal Lecture.
Silverevilchao: Ok, I SO want a video of what Sousuke said to Gauron in his Shut Up, Hannibal!. If only to see him cuss once.
ROBRAM 89: Just pointingout something interesting: the quotes page is roughly exactly as long as the main page.
Caswin: Only with folders closed. That makes a fairly significant difference.
Caswin: It sounds like the author of the "Playing With" section had a fairly specific instance in mind. It doesn't really describe the trope (the villain's dissection and mind games, the hero's rejection of his claims, etc.) proper.
Thundercross: Removed the following because it comes across as the opposite of this trope, with the author bending the Rule Of Cautious Editing Judgement to try to justify.
- In 2009, at a town hall meeting at which Congressman Barney Frank was speaking, a woman stood up and began spouting off about the 'Nazi socialist' health care reform plan, and asked why Frank was supporting it. Frank's response: "If you'll excuse me for reverting back to my Southern heritage and answering your question with another question, let me ask you this: On what planet do you spend most of your time?" He then went on to compare trying to argue with her to arguing with his kitchen table.
Azul120: I don't know if that V. V. getting knifed in the forehead, nor the accompanying pic, fits for that page. Seemed more like a Talk to the Fist moment to me.
