Working Title: Hufflepuff House: From YKTTW
Earnest: I've only ocasionally seen episodes of Yu-Gi-Oh GX, so correct me if I'm wrong, but are the students in Rah/Yellow house the Hufflepuffs of the setting?
- Vampire Buddha
- They're definitely an example. The only members we see spend more time hanging around the Slifer dorm anyway.
Pisthetairos: I'm not sure, but I think in {{300}}, the people with the "A" shields are not Athenians, but rather Arcadians - one of the spartans mentions that the athenians had very distinctive uniforms during the battle of Marathon.
Ununnilium:
- SG-1 had more then those. The Re'tu, the Re'ol, the Tok'ra and one could even argue to include the Free Jaffa to the list, all of whom oppose the Goa'uld and achieve nothing.
This is too broad. I mean, if you're including the Tok'ra, who drive large chunks of the plot...
Haven: There was an entry that said "The entire continents of Pyadonia, Atmora, Thras and". Pyadonia showed up only here, Atmora turned up Elder Scrolls results, so I assumed that's what it's from. Someone with more knowledge of the subject could adjust that example though.
Off Side 7: When the Sorting Hat sings, "I'll teach the rest" that makes encouraging fair play the defining trait of Helga Hufflepuff herself, not all future members of Hufflepuff house. What amuses me to no end is that previous songs described the House as being hard workers or some such, and now that we know, historically, Helga decided to "teach the rest," we can conclude that the Hat (or someone like Dumbledore asking the Hat) basically decided to give them a trait to make them feel better.
Vampire Buddha: Cut out some
natter.
Seriously guys, don't do this.
- Lampshaded in the Goblet of Fire, where the Hufflepuffs become sour at Harry stealing some of the spotlight for the Tri-Wizard Tournament from Hufflepuff Cedric Diggory; J.K. Rowling notes in the book that it had been one of the most significant achievements the house had ever achieved in a very long time.
- In fact, one of the Sorting Hat's songs relating the history of the school, after outlining each house's single defining character trait has the founder of Hufflepuff say, "I'll take the rest."
- In context, though, that had the thrust of "I'll teach everyone equally without regard to the traits you hold important," making fair play the actual defining trait of Hufflepuff.
- Plus the other two songs do list defining character traits of Hufflepuffs, namely fairness, loyalty, patience, trustworthiness, and work ethic (leading some readers to conclude that being well suited to Hufflepuff is actually the best reflection on your character out of all four houses). This is also the widest-ranging list of traits given by the Hat — the other houses sort of get one-and-a-half each, their lists featuring a lot of closely related words; so for the same amount of coverage per song, Ravenclaw is still limited to intelligence/scholarliness, Slytherin to ambition/cunning, and Gryffindor to bravery/chivalry, whereas Hufflepuff seems to cover a lot more ground.
- In fact, Hufflepuff is the only house, Slytherin being treated as pure evil aside, to actually inherently be goodhearted - thanks to their defining trait, you'll almost never see a fair, trustworthy Hufflepuff turn evil, whereas bravery, intelligence/cunning, and ambition can all be used towards villainy.
- This was somewhat subverted in the final book of the series, when proud Hufflepuff Ernie MacMillan is the first Hogwarts student to stand up and announce that, rather than be evacuated, he wants to stay and fight. Ernie's been a sometimes-friend of the Trio since book 2, and it's a good scene... but a bit too late to reverse the Hufflepuff House effect.
- However, the Goblet of Fire chose Hufflepuff Cedric Diggory as Hogwarts Triwizard Champion, and he was also the first person to die on-screen in the books, and the first casualty (that matters to the readers, mind you) of the Second War.
- Cedric was also the first (and only) Hufflepuff to be featured on cover art (albeit only in the American edition). Come to think of it, I don't think any Ravenclaw's been on any edition's cover... Then again, Hufflepuffs have never been featured in a chapter illustration, while Ravenclaws have been featured four or five times, depending on whether Helena was in the House.
- If we're counting Word of God, Tonks is a Hufflepuff, and she was on the back of Order of Phoenix with the other Order members.
- Of course, all these are completely ignored in the final book where victory on Earth equals complete victory in the entire war. Most frustrating is casual dismissal of even the Yeerk home world, apparently it along with all other significant Yeerk outposts is dealt with in the three off-camera years before Ax is abducted.
- If I remember correctly, one of the books stated that the Yeerk Empire had never actually controlled the Yeerk Homeworld. After the original group of rouge Yeerks left the planet on stolen Andalite ships, the Andalite military set up a continual watch over the planet to keep any more Yeerks from leaving.
- It probably helped that the Animorphs captured an intact Pool ship in the final book, and the Yeerks had already been massing on Earth. Also, it just occurred to me that the above-described situation is a bit like the Holy Britannian Empire.
- This troper isn't quite certain that that fits into the Hufflepuff idea. The closes that A So Ia F had to Hufflepuff was house Tyrell. They served as a generic support structure for the first two books. Not really gaining any character till after the siege of King a Landing but still balancing out the powers. All the rest are just not touched upon. The mark of a true hufflepuff house is their importance and generic nature at the same time.
- At the start of the first season, the AEU didn't even have a complete orbital elevator like the other two powers. And they ended up being painted as relying entirely on arms sales for their prosperity.
- This troper doesn't necessarily agree. The AEU had a notable lack of focus in the early stages largely because they and the Union were relatively lenient of Celestial Beeing's actions, with the HRL the only faction that was out en masse to get the Gundams. When the chips are really thrown in and comparisons made, though, it's really difficult to compare the AEU to the Union, which has the United States of America as its key member.
- Pestilens is fighting a protracted war with the Lizardmen in Lustria if the Lustria book is any indication, and Moulder supplied a huge amount of warbeasts to the Forces of Evil in the Storm of Chaos. Really, it's Skryre who're sitting on their backsides picking their noses - they're the only ones without a dedicated army list.
- Doesn't stop the fact that Skryre is the fan-favorite, DOOMWHEELES!!! (Plus they just made a freaking nuke)
Close Seriously guys, don't do this.
