I can't speak for the troper proposing this, but BatmanGrabsAGun seems to imply that the "over the threshold" action is necessary for good (and the hero) to win out. The trope proposed would probably also cover incidents where the hero goes too far or crosses a personal moral line, and ''not'' for the "greater good"--perhaps to show that the hero isn't perfect, can have a dark side, can succumb to the same temptations we flawed ordinary folk can, and indeed that he [[NotSoDifferent may not be that different]] from the villain. The example I gave above showed a dark side to Sheridan, provoked out of [[ItsPersonal extreme personal frustration]] in not knowing what happened to his wife. He succumbed to a temptation to try to coerce answers out of his prisoner unlawfully--and he failed to get those answers that way. ''{{Babylon 5}}'' (a show I'm very fond of, as my handle would suggest) actually did this a lot, to show that everyone had flaws, which could have very serious and destructive consequences if they let them--and no hero was immune to this. Not even the [[NiceGuy boy]] [[TheReliableOne scout]] Lennier....
