Just on the topic of the working definitions for "gameplay" and "story": I think the definition of "story" is overly narrow. You're overcomplicating matters by conceiving of story as something solely designed to generate an emotional response from the player: consider the ExcusePlot, for example, in which the story exists to facilitate the gameplay and nothing else. You must also consider the fact that when people talk about videogame "story" they are, counter-intuitively, describing more than just the narrative: I believe that in this context "story" encompasses elements such as characters, setting, theme etc., all of which may be integrated into gameplay or not (consider the term "ludonarrative dissonance", coined in reference to games in which the theme of the game's story is at odds with the message advanced by its gameplay). It also encompasses games that have a clearly-defined setting but not a narrative as such.
