While this Half-Life mod looks like a traditional Zombie Apocalypse at first, it works quite different from other works which prefer quantity over quality. In here, there's less amount but the mood is considerably darker.
One of the contributing factors is that never once throughout the entire game you'll see a single ray of sunlight.
They Hunger feature a variety of really interesting locations especially in the first two episodes. The final third one seems kind of rushed compared to them.
You wont'be under assault non-stop. In fact there are quite numerous areas withou any enemies but with lots of detail and irressistible atmosphere of spookiness.
I appreciate that there are various types of undead creatures, including animals. Also some of the zombies are quite smart and can actually talk. The human ones at least. Sme of the zombie lines are quite entertaining. My favorite one remains: Frreeeeeeeeeshh...
This also greatly contributes to the overal spookiness in certain areas, where you're enclosed in dark confined spaces, with no enemy in sight but they're somewhere nearby and just keep moaning non-stop. It will really get on your nerves after a while.
The smarter undead include cops which are still capable of using firearms which actually icreases the challenge.
Unfortunately, basically all creatures are recycled NPCs of the original game and hus behave practically the same way. Some of them fare better, some worse. Small creatures are derived from headcrabs. The undead cattle is made from the cut panthereye monster. But the biggest offenders are probably the bullsquids, which bear basically no relation to the plot and look exactly the same as in the original. The giant one was a prime example of Giant Space Flea from Nowhere.
Also at times this mod tries to contribute to the original game's philosophy by throwing sometimes outright ludicrous jumping, or worse swimming puzzles. The worst offender is probably the railroad dam in 1-st ep. forcing you to swim through lengthy cramped flooded staircase while there are a minimum of two ichtyosaurs out for your blood - another creature that seems to be just shoehorned in.
At one point in the second chapter you may actually come across a funny bug when the ichtys get out of the water and hop on land in a silly way.
Despite its spookiness the game features a generous dose of black comedy, especially towards hapless civilians. One time you can find a guy buried under an outhouse up to his armpits in ... well you know what. His only spoken line only makes it funnier.
Also the Big Bad duo is incredibly cheesy, especially the Sheriff who doesn't go far for a cuss and with his attitude is obviously an expy of Eric Cartman.
Now that I think of it, some of the parts also just seem like a homage to Blood which is not surprising. Baring the story these games have awfully lot in common.
Despite the dated graphic and gameplay mechanism They Hunger is still a fun experience. I strongly recommend it.
VideoGame Delightful mix of horror and black comedy.
