My history with Sonamy is... weird. I shipped them hard as a kid, dropped the ship equally hard when Flanderization turned her into an insane stalker, and jumped back on hard after Sonic Frontiers and the IDW comic.
It takes a very talented writer to redeem a ship I used to hate. Ian Flynn is one, and now molinaskies joins the list.
Even setting the shipping aside, this fic is insanely well-written. The characterization, dialogue, location descriptions, emotion, everything is spot-on.
Every chapter works as both a self-contained adventure and part of the ongoing narrative, for example one features the pair having an impromptu night-time race (a favourite of mine because it lines up with how I used to headcanon Sonic Adventure 2 multiplayer), in another they find a lost Chao and end up invited to a party with its owner and some friends. The moments where Sonic and Amy interact with civilians are a highlight, as it's clearly something that gives their lives meaning in-canon but is rarely depicted.
As for the actual shipping, this fic nails Sonic and Amy's much healthier modern (Frontiers and IDW) dynamic. Currently, they're Platonic Life-Partners who both know they want to be not-so-platonic but circumstances make that difficult. The relationship is played more as a wholesome Pseudo-Romantic Friendship than a "spicy" romance, which works for where both are in canon now.
If I had any complaints, Amy's self-deprecating speech in Chapter 5 feels out-of-character given the fic's place in the timeline (after the Metal Virus arc of IDW, therefore also after every game up to Forces). By this point, she's long since proven she isn't a burden, and I doubt canon Amy ever saw herself that way past Heroes.
