Not the good kind of nostalgia.

As the name of this game suggests, Nostalgia is intended to be an orthodox JRPG which treats players to a taste of the past, reminding them of the games of an earlier generation. And it certainly delivered in that regard. While playing it, I couldn't help but think of my favorite RP Gs from my childhood.

Unfortunately, what I couldn't help but think of was how Nostalgia failed to measure up to them at every turn.

If I had to pick a single word to describe Nostalgia, it would be "perfunctory." Quests are embarked on, characters introduced and plot points revealed in the most cursory manner possible, creating a narrative that's less paint-by-numbers than it is connect-the-dots. Like Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, it is a game stripped down to the basic elements of its genre, with most of the charm lost in the process. While it might provide young players with an adequate introduction to RP Gs, anyone who remembers the games by which it's inspired are likely to find it highly unsatisfying.
