I just watched it and I'm inclined to agree, more or less. Nothing to write home about, but it's not the worst. Some of the clichés worked for me and some of them didn't. There were some neat effects, but nothing mind-blowing. I'd call it So Okay Its Average.
I saw it coming out of a Buffy marathon and I kept wishing Nicholas Brendon could've played Dave.
Rhymes with "Protracted."I seem to agree with the general consensus here. It had its cliches, but while it didn't put revolutionary new spins on them, they certainly weren't bad. They embraced their cliches rather than relying on them out of mandation, and made the whole thing work fairly well.
Plus they had so much fun with the magic, it's hard not to be a bit charmed.

Surprisingly Good
I watched this movie out of boredom and I have to say that it was better than I thought it would be. It certainly wasn't breaking any new ground, but sometimes you get a story that uses it's cliches in the right way. This was one of those. The story itself was pretty simple: Love Triangle, Sealed Evil in a Can, Chosen One, etc.
The Infodump at the beginning of the story was useful, if a bit spoiler-laden. The casting for each character fit. The special effects were decent, but they weren't overdone. The first battle in the magic shop had a good HSQ, as did the Chinatown sequence with the dragon. The bad guys weren't used as well as they could be, but they served their purposes.
All in all, I'd give it 3 stars.
