The quintessential "good prevails" anime

Monster has a two-fold story: on the one hand, it is a thriller about manhunts, serial killers, brainwashing, Nazi conspiracies, escapes from prison, brilliant machinations, and one of the most frightening, psychopathic villains of all time. On the other, it's a very basic tale of a good man fighting evil - except that what is evil in the first place is carefully and painstakingly dissected and deconstructed. In many ways, this second story far overshadows the first.

The morality here is in sharp focus. This is not Death Note, which introduces a complex ethical issue and then runs away from it, nor is it a spout for simplistic platitudes. The issues here are quite basic - what is the right of a murderer to life; are all people equal; can evil find redemption? - but they are handled with care and comprehensiveness. The progress of the protagonist from being a pushover to a dangerous man with an iron will to someone constantly at the maddening edge of compromising his dearly-bought ideals, giving up his ground inch by inch is a frightful look at humanity and its limits.

I liked the first story better.

You can't even write racist abuse in excrement on somebody's car without the politically correct brigade jumping down your throat!

What do you mean by first story? Monster is a stand alone work; it's not a sequel to anything.

...eventually, we will reach a maximum entropy state where nobody has their own socks or underwear, or knows who to ask to get them back.
