Super Smash Flash 2 Version 9 (a redone review)

Pros:

  • Like a Smash brothers game...for the most part

  • Some ideas for characters worked like Sora (when he could switch spells), Ness, and even Zelda/Sheik (forward air needs a nerf)

  • Pretty good for casuals who want to have fun or are looking for a gateway into a Smash game

Cons:

  • Some things are outright broken (Wario and Lloyd (to a lesser extent))

  • Some characters are WAY too good (Peach (Bottom tier my ass. She's not overpowered but she is way better than she should be and significantly takes out most of the roster), Wario, Sonic)

  • (Major) Projectile game (except maybe Samus) and the usage of high tier characters is rewarded way too much. Some characters don't even stand a chance against others (Mario) and are bottom tier as a result due to spammy projectiles. All thanks to....

  • (Major) .....The absence of lag in attacks or being completely unable to catch them in it due it being really quick.

  • Spiking....K Oing and starting a combo from 0%? Not being able to recover? Seriously?

Closing Thoughts:

Casually, I think that this game is pretty fun. I like playing it sometimes when I don't try to take it seriously. I personally think that ersions seven and eight are two of my favorite Smash Flash games. Seven because of some creativity when it comes to the characters and eight because the mechanics are really good in that game.

Competitively, I think it just doesn't work. I have no idea how people think this game is ready for competitive play. Wario's combos (especially his down air) is broken as all hell and Lloyd's just spammy (If you don't believe me, just use his recovery on the ground then use his neutral air. Rinse and repeat.). Those are just a few of them.

I also do not appreciate the clear advantage some characters have over others. Peach, Wario, and Naruto (These aren't the only ones) are all WAY better than a majority of the roster and some of them outright destroy the approaching options of some characters.

And the last point I can cover is the absence of lag. Dear god, who thought this was a good idea? Either there is no lag in attacks or there is VERY little. Lloyd's neutral air, for example. should have a lot of lag since it strings into so many combos and covers so much space in a quick amount of time.

I'll make a full review of this game in my blog but for now, this will suffice.

So, here we go again, eh, mate? This time I won't totally disagree, except of three minor thing and one major, lets begin with that one, shall we? Wario and Lloyd being broken, Wario is almost balanced, with the excpetion of his D-Air spike, which, in my opinion, should have a sweet spot for spike only in the first frames of the attack, Lloyd, in the other hand can be easily read, making him too predictable if you keep your space The other three things are about the lag in attacks, which is still there, believe it or not. Mario being low tier is more about his lack of Combo potential than him being underpowered against characters like Sora, Ichigo or Lloyd, and finally, why do you say Peach is OP? I frankly don't see how this is other than her low jump float up air, which is easily DI-able Hope we see each other again Kahila911 ♦

Yeah Lloyd isn't broken actually I was wrong on that (I still need work on reviewing fighting games). But some of Wario's movies are UNSPEAKABLY broken like his down-air spike (Yeah spiking on the first frames sounds pretty good actually) and his Chomp (according to the forums)

There is lag but like I said, its either VERY little or there's none at all. Just use people like Tails, Marth, and hell even Donkey Kong (Yes even the Dong) and spam their respective moves. (Tails: side B, Marth Side B, Donkey Kong up B). It shouldn't kill but its almost unpunishable due to it being flat out spammy. Lag plays a huge part in making the Smash games what they are and removing it is unacceptable. If it fixes this aspect then its already one step closer to being better than Smash 4 competitively (amount of Lag cancels are ridiculous in that game (Nearly unpunishable) and its too defensive). They promised to fix it in Beta so that's good.

But the main reason why I don't like this game competitively is how unbalanced the roster is. This links to my complaint about Mario being low tier and people like Ness having no chance against most of the roster (which is why I thought Peach was OP....which she actually isn't). I'm aware that there are bad matchups, but there is a difference between bad matchups and just flat out favoring other characters. People like Sora, Ichigo, Naruto (Especially this guy. Playing close, mid, and long range without being bad in any area.), and even Sheik (another huge example. Forward air seriously needs to be nerfed if she's going to build up damage that easily. Her KO moves should be her slower moves like her smash attacks not her fast forward air that almost guarantees K Os) have huge advantages over half of the roster for having an unmatchable combo game and guaranteed KO moves along with that (except for Sora. As if he needs a KO move). Or if you're Naruto, being good in almost EVERY area (Easily S Tier. He's no Brawl Meta Knight but he's just a bit too good) and not having many weaknesses to balance that (unless you count his recovery which isn't even that bad compared to Lloyd's or Sora's). I like Flash's style of comboing, but sometimes it gets flat out ridiculous with a few characters and the half of the characters can't do much to counter it (unless they have a counter, combo breaker (which won't help much), or a decent projectile which is ALSO rewarded a bit too much in this game)

I'm basically forced to switch mains constantly because this game doesn't favor them compared to the high tier ones. I know that low-tier vs high-tier matches depend on the player, but its almost impossible in this game because its (to me) very unbalanced when it comes to its roster.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the game. I WANT to see this game improve, I WANT to see it be great competitively, I WANT it to appeal to both Casual and Competitive players. But to be honest, if this version of Flash was an official Smash game. It would honestly be worse than Smash 4 thanks to the lack of lag and an unbalanced roster.

And yeah...that's just what I think....
