WWE 2K15 officially makes the series Capcom Sequel Stagnation

Over the past several years the series had made great strides to improve the wrestling experience for fans, whether it be through the Attitude Era and WrestleMania modes or tweaks to the gameplay. 2K15 however promised much but delivered a cut down version of the game you have been played before.

The big news was that you could make up a NXT rookie and play through their career. This is entirely gone from the 360 and PS3 versions. There is not even a simplified version like the NBA series. Instead we get a couple of story modes not a patch on previous efforts. We were promised a overhauled CAW mode that amounts to a different background, that's it, the same thing we have seen for the past five years. If there is nothing new then this might mean that creations from previous games could be imported in. No, anything that had been painstakingly worked on has to be made again from scratch with the same limitations.

And custom finishers, stories and music had also been done away with: why? If there was room needed for more content that would be one thing, but there is nothing not already in previous games, done better. In fact most of the custom original or old options have been removed. All we get are a few new moves which hardly necessitates the need for the removal of so many options.

As for the changed story modes, we get some nice video packages but the matches play themselves with no player input more than ever. Speaking of no input there is none from Jim Ross even on matches he called, making his absence another sad omission.

But does it play any better? Here we see another problem in that the promised graphic and gameplay elements had not been implemented. It is virtually the same game. It does look very slightly cleaner and the CPU offers a little more of a challenge, but nothing that a slight tweak of the options in previous games wouldn't offer.

Overall the latest 2K game has been gutted, and has continued a worrying trend in gaming of the Lying Creator. Aside from that a lot of content is being held back for DLC. The servers are intended to be closed down in May next year leaving very little time to use custom content and even less incentive to share and use them. Many long term fans who already bought the game have every right to feel betrayed, with the series deserving abandonment.

Don't the WWE games do this every couple years? I remember 2010 being a pretty big step back from 2009.

I mean, probably not on the same level of disappointment. It seems like every few games one comes along that's one steps forward, two step back.

WWE games with Automated Wrestle Bot 2000, a.k.a. John Cena on the cover are always doomed to suck.

Litle Wiggle, there are a couple of games you may be thinking of. In 2007 the game was cut down somewhat as THQ learned how the next gen tech worked, but they didn't shaft fans by taking out half the game. In 2010 the series was completely reworked, but 2011 took out most of the moves to make room for Universe mode. And if you want to go way back Just Bring It had a three match season mode, opposed to the in depth one before.

This is arguably even worse than any of those because okay maybe some features were too much to ask for. What reason was there to take out what was there? What did they need the room for? Is it going to be put back in as paid DLC? If this is the direction 2K are going in then that is very low and dirty business practices, forcing gamers to pay for basic game functionality that was there before. I hope that this is not the case but given much of the game was held back that is my fear.

Why do I figure that 2K took out all this to make people buy the PS 4/Xbone versions?

Well N8han11, a little research reveals that next gen is essentially a different game. Many of the features in previous versions are removed, the control scheme is different and the proper NXT mode and upgraded CAW mode is included, which makes sense as there is a difference in other 2K games from current to next gen such as more detailed and in depth My Player modes that would be more than what the 360 and PS3 can handle. However they cut the roster to 25 and you cannot create divas, full stop. You wanted a beast of a woman who could break Beth Phoenix and Chyna in half? Or you still follow Buffy into the comics and you wanted to make up Kennedy like I did? Well too bad, my fear that divas would be excluded completely was realized on next gen.

I'm not sure if it was a calculated move to force fans to buy next gen, but either way they're screwed. We have the choice of a cut down version or a cut down version either way. Now it might be thinking to move forward with new additions, better graphics, different play but where are many of the features we had for the past fifteen years? Even Backstage Assault and XX, two of the worst wrestling games in the time there was the Smackdown series, had these options. I do know many fans are done, current or next gen they're done. Jumped the Shark, Ruined Forever, They Just Didn't Care, you name it.

Bastard1, sorry to miss yours, I think if you flip the cover over you get a sexy image of Michael Cole if you prefer.

In all seriousness though I grew concerned when I heard Wild Ones. I know it was at Wrestlemania but it confirmed the series had gone full PG Universe era, and that as well as the other faults is reason why the series seems unsalvageable.
