Hmm. I'd call it a borderline case. It's described as a mild painkiller drunk because it's soothing, so by itself it wouldn't fit the "mild stimulant" clause for Uncoffee, but it looks like coffee and is actively compared to it in-comic, so I would say it squeaks in.
Moving this example here as it's too speculative right now and the material is better covered by the "No Peeking!" Request trope entry that was just added.
- No Nudity Taboo: Beryl's reaction to Jardin's desire to change clothes in private suggests this, although the possible reason(s) (they're all female, they're all soldiers, that's just how they are, or something else) so far aren't clear.
Jardin: I don't suppose I could get some privacy for a moment? Beryl: Why? I have already seen you naked. Talon: Well, I haven't!
I was doing a re-read last night, and I noticed something I hadn't caught before. When Stillstorm is speaking on the bridge before the Umiak show up, her dialogue is written in a subtle italic font. Does this imply that she's speaking the Loroi native language so that Jardin can't understand what she's saying, or is this something else, if anything?
Hide / Show RepliesI had a look at the Insider article on the trade language, and apparently the Loroi do not have a native language of their own — they use trade as their everyday tongue when they don't just use telepathy. I'm not entirely certain what the italics are intended to mean — perhaps they're just a tone indicator?
I'm not sure...I went a bit further and all her dialogue is in that font, all the way through ch. 1. I guess it's just a stylistic choice.
For the record, I asked Jim Francis on Twitter and he said that it's a vocal inflection.
Would that drink that the Loroi have and Alex samples be an example of Uncoffee?
