This is played straight in the continuity "Shattered Glass" ("SG") where the Decepticons were good and the Autobots evil. Megatron in "SG" (according to the "tfwiki.net" site had been a mathematician who found civil war was brewing. When the evil Optimus Prime and his Autobots conquered Cybertron, Megatron led his "Decepticons" as the leader of La Resistance.
In a way, this Whitewashing the Villain would form the base for the mirror-verse version.
