I'm not sure if there's some deeper justifying metaphor to the quote, or if it really IS metaphorgotten, but that quote about "…but at the end of the day they’d settle quite happily for egg and chips, if it was well done and maybe had a slice of tomato." seems like metaphorgotten.

It's just an extension of the analogy that leads up to it. I.e., "people will do all this fancy stuff [for food or sex], but at the end of the day, they're okay with a basic [meal or screw] so long as it's not terrible, and maybe had something special to it."
