Agreed - as of this arc, he's proven that, while morally ambiguous, he's entirely capable of acting in the name of the greater good (by having his men kill several thousand souls in order to stabilize the two worlds) and displaying positive emotions/traits (by showing legitimate concern for Nemu during the battle with Pernida). A complete monster wouldn't do those things.
