It's very confusing having "villains that don't ever lie" and "hero gets betrayed" as the same trope.

Removed this from the Supernatural section:

  • Demons in the show often lie, but whenever they say something you really don't want to believe, they're telling the truth. Cue the following repeated conversation: "Was X true?" "Demons lie." (A sure sign that X is indeed true. It's usually a secret one brother's been trying to keep from the other. You'd think they'd have learned by now that secrets between them never end well.)

The process of events described has never happened on the show. There are a few sorta similar events, but none fit what is described here:

  • Meg tells Jo in "Born Under A Bad Sign" that John Winchester performed a Mercy Kill on her father, but this is never proven either true or false. The "demons lie" conversation doesn't happen, as Jo never tells anyone about it. She does, however, ask Dean later in the same episode whether demons ever tell the truth, but he tells her that they do sometimes, if they know it'll mess with your head.
  • Azazel tells Dean in "All Hell Breaks Loose, Part Two" that Sam Came Back Wrong, but it's still unknown if he was telling the truth or not. This is the only time that the "Is X true?" "Demons lie" conversation has happened, specifically between Dean and Bobby.
  • Alastair tells Dean in (I think) "On The Head of a Pin" that Dean broke the first seal, allowing for the Apocalypse to happen. Castiel confirms that Alastair was telling the truth, but the "demons lie" conversation doesn't happen.

Cut this:

* MacBeth would've remained a thane loyal to King Duncan if the Witches didn't screw with his head. Their "information" had such a dramatic influence on his behavior that he nearly counts as Brainwashed and Crazy.
** Of course, the first had already come true, so he had reason to believe the others would.
*** As, indeed, they did...just not always in the way he expected.
Because of natter and because it is highly questionable. MacBeth admitted that he had fantasized about murdering Duncan before ever meeting the witches.
