Not sure this would be a subverted example or not - in Hey Arnold!, Arnold and Gerald dated sixth graders, one black and one white. They danced with the girl of the other race and got a kiss from them.

Is it a token couple?

Not sure whether to edit or not - the Captain Planet example says that the Wheeler/Linka example is very subversive because Wheeler and Linka were from feuding countries. Yet this troper always took that as par for the course, since it also implies (unfortunately) that it's more likely that two Caucasians from nations at war who never seem to get along would find it easier to be attracted to each other than a Caucasian and a person of another race.
How exactly does this apply to High School Musical? Yes, Chad and Taylor are two black characters who get together, but they are the only non-interracial couple in the first movie! Troy and Gabriella are white and hispanic/fillipina respectively and in The Stinger Zeke(black) and Sharpay (white) get together. So why is one non-interracial couple so noteworthy?
