Would road cycling count? It has tacky lycra garments, expensive equipment (bicycle materials by themselves are a rabbit hole of ever-increasing prices) and tends to attract the same snooty crowd as golf and fencing.

Trope sponsor here (wasn't mine originally just grabbed it from someone else), and I just saw this.

I think it counts. I also think I saw road cycling being regarded negatively (with a bike as opposed to motorcycles which are seen as cooler) in Bakuon!!. I'll rewatch it again to see if it fits as an example.

Nice. If I see any examples of road biking being treated like this, I'll add them.

I don't know... the arguments are solid, but I just don't know if it actually shakes out like that. Most fictional portrayals of road cycling I can think of are mostly Lance Armstrong references and both pre- and post- scandal, "snootiness" doesn't really come up. The closest I can think of is Calvin and Hobbes where Calvin's dad bikes, and wears tacky gear and is made fun of, but that's treated as "dorky" and not "snooty."

Similarly, that Bakuon example also sounds less snooty and more "uncool" which isn't the same. Not like motorcycles are cheaper than bicycles.

Of course, of course, it depends on the core of the depiction. If it's seen as dorky and not a "rich guy" thing, it doesn't apply even if the sport in question is 18-hole golf. We can't add examples just because "they're on the description list".

Well, I point this out because said Bakuon example has been added and it really doesn't seem like an example as-written.

Hell, the example doesn't even come across as being about a sport at all and seems to be more about biking as a form of transportation.

Maybe we should take it to the "Is this an example?" thread then. https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13543987200A54420100&page=1

(Edited for hotlinking) (edit 2, I give up)

Late reply, but the Bakuon example fits 100%, @Larkman. It's an anime about cycling as a sport and the main character (and the author) hates bicyclists with a passion which is evident in the quote I added to the example and how the protagonist convinces another character to replace bicycling with motorcycling instead.

I wouldn't add an example to my own launched trope that's shoehorned or doesn't apply. I wouldn't want to contribute to misuse like this.

Late to being late to the discussion, but pulling the example to discuss:

  • Bakuon!!: Onsa doesn't think highly of bicyclists calling them idiots while she views motorcycling as more awesome and convinces Onsa to get a motorcycle instead of riding her bike which leaves her all sweaty when getting up a steep hill to go to school.
Onsa: Why is it that every jerk riding a bicycle acts like such an idiot?! Wandering around the car lanes in spandex and weird helmets! Onsa (to Hane): Only an idiot would ride a bike.

I didn't say it wasn't necessarily an example, I said it wasn't an example as-written. The example text itself doesn't even mention sports and the quote isn't about snootiness but just dislike. If it's an example, it needs a rewrite.

EDIT: You know, devoid of any further context, the example as-written seems more like an example for motorcycle-riding, rather than bicycling. You have one character turning his nose up at an activity literally anyone can do and insisting people partake in a more expensive hobby.
