The last bullet point is actually a pretty reasonable justification, I hand't thought of it like that before, the closer you are the less chance of some sort of evasion. I guess tracking missiles would possibly deal with that, but then ships would have counter-tracking-missile missiles which would have plenty of time to range in
I want to cull the none-visual medium aversions. The main reasons this trope exists is more due to the need to present the fights on-screen, which books can more easily avoid.
