Okay, I'll bite: Who are the Merlin counterparts of:

  • Lex? (Not Arthur; even if Uther is Lionel, Arthur doesn't have the "destined to become an enemy" gimmick - quite the reverse, in fact.)
  • Ma Kent? (I'll accept Gaius as Jonathan.)
  • Pete Ross? (Again, Arthur doesn't exactly fit.)

I'm assuming Gwen and Morgana are meant to be Chloe and Lana, although since there's no real similarity I'm not sure which is which.

I'm not saying Merlin wasn't inspired by Smallville, it clearly was. I just think "thunderingly obvious lift" is a bit strong.

Removed:

  • How many films in the Star Wars saga end with a ragtag group of pilots defying the odds to destroy a massive space station/battleship before it can kill the heroes? FOUR OUT OF NINE!!
  • Die Hard 2 is literally Die Hard at an Airport: Terrorists take over Dulles International Airport (instead of the Nakatomi office building), and a wisecracking cop, who was there to visit his wife, must stop them. The cop himself quickly becomes aware of how similar this is to his last action-packed adventure and does some memorable Lampshade Hanging on it:
John McClane: Oh man, I can't fucking believe this. Another basement, another elevator. How can the same shit happen to the same guy twice?!
  • Rambo IV is pretty much a Bloodier and Gorier version of Rambo III. Though instead of Rambo trying to rescue Col. Trautman, he's now trying to rescue Sarah and a group of missionaries, and the Karen rebels are pretty much similar to the Mujahideen from the third movie. The Big Bad in both movies are similar too, as both Zaysen and Tint love slaughtering men, women, and children and burning down villages.

Works in the same series having a similar format is more Strictly Formula.

I found out just recently that Rocky and the original The Karate Kid had the same director, and the premises and genres don't seem to be all that different, so, do both of these movies qualify for this trope?
