Should the preppiness be acknowledged in story to make it a trope? Otherwise it's just names that people think are preppy, without any other basis?
The Harry Potter examples seem off...

I notice that for historical reasons, a number of British noble families have French surnames. Do British people tend to think that a British person with a French-sounding surname or one that starts with de sounds posh, or would it only sound that way if the name in question is that of a real noble family like the de Veres?
