I think it would be haresplitting. :) Hare is used in the title simply because rhymes with hair, and the hope is that people will think of rabbits as interchangeable with hares for the purpose of this trope, even if that is not factually accurate. Generally fictional trope articles are better when they don't get bogged down with Real Life details.
Perhaps a few words at the end would provide a hint: turn
"Plus, any animal with huge buck teeth is bound to have a nasty bite, regardless of diet."
into
"Plus, rabbits have huge buck teeth and a nasty bite. Hares are bigger and are willing to use that bite."
Edited by CamacanComing in very late, but surely this trope should cover all lagomorphs, not just rabbits (even if it happens that rabbits are more commonly used than hares in this trope).
Gallusrostromegalus’ anecdote about jack rabbits needs to be added here somewhere. It’s what intrigued me about rabbits in horror in the first place.

Ought someone to ad a little clarification here on the topic of how hares =/= rabbits? They're entirely different animals, though often confused by people not looking at them, and hares are much bigger, and in general meaner.
Or would that be beside-the-point hairsplitting?
