I'd like to note that the part about making little sense from a mechanical design perspective is not quite correct, as one could take this trope as being the robot/cyborg equivalent of a personal computer's small LED indicators that serve only to notify the user of the machine's operational status (power on/off, wireless on/off, etc.).
