What is a 14 letter word to mean "mercenary captain"? It's been driving me crazy!

The closest I've got so far is "condottiere", which is 11 letters.
There is, of course, the possibility that whoever added that bit was misremembering the clue, or even just made it up on the spot.

It may be multiple words or a proper name, but nothing comes to mind.

The heck with this — I'm going to change it to "11 letters", and it can stay like that unless the original writer comes back and explains why it was 14.
