Why can't we add Real Life Examples here?

I plugged into the Matrix only to ask this one.

Not sure what kind of fourth wall real life has.

I think this falls under the "who the hell would even DO this" category of NRLEP tropes. It's a fiction-dependent trope, so while there's no sane reason to add real life examples...

I found a breaking the fourth wall thing but I don't know what to do next.

Add that as an example?

How about when one of the characters in the show say something about the background music? Like in Teen Wolf animated series “Did you hear that music?” “What music?” “This: The course of the scarlet paw!” But the only time he intended to turn on the jingle by saying the sentence it didn’t work and they thioght he was stressed or something. Or like in Banjo-Tooie: “I think we are going to fight a boss!” “How do you tell that?” “Don’t you hear? The music changed!”

How about when the characters of the show or the videogame actually touch or smash against the glass of the screen? In Supersmash Bros. it does happen almost on a regular time, when a character is thrown upside and then it falls in the background or against the screen. Not to mention the Nintendog Trophy assistant. As he is summoned he appears in the very foreground, pawing the screen and obscuring the visual (it's one of those neutral Assistant trophies that don't help anyone but are funny).

Does this apply when a character turns towards the camera for a long reaction shot while the background music plays? In their universe they've just turned away from everybody there to stare at what should be a blank wall.

For example right after the line "You should have listened to your father." In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Mmm... Hard to say. I don't think so, but, as always, Your Mileage May Vary.

My boyfriend and I had a laugh tonight watching 21 Jump Street. Let me clarify... we had more of a laugh than usual at the very campy show! Why? Because Johnny Depp completely broke the fourth wall in the episode "Higher Education" (Episode 6, Season 2 on DVD). As cheesy as the series always is, Depp's knowing look through the camera at the television viewers was so out of the blue. We had to give Depp kudos but can't help but wonder if his indication to the camera was his idea or that of the director. Either way, we had to rewind it and chuckle.

Don't know exactly where I'd file them but...

Red Dwarf kind of went *through* the Fourth Wall in "Back to Earth" and then eventually turned it around into a gag that we the audience were the fictional characters and they were real.

Deep Space 9 sort of did it also in 'Far Beyond the Stars' where 'Benny Russell' was a real life 60s version of Ben Sisko only he was writing DS 9. This vision was revisited in future episodes and the progress of his story followed the progress of DS 9 itself.

Both are a little different though as they don't directly address the audience's universe but create a sort of fictional copy of it in addition to the one that already exists.

I think I've added Untitled! here before, but I couldn't find it. I've added it again — but I don't want to start/perpetuate an edit war, so if there's a reason it was removed, can someone tell me?
