Small nitpick: Why is the page image Sanada Yukimura from Samurai Warriors but the quote is commonly used by Zhao Yun, his Dynasty Warriors counterpart? Just seems a bit silly to me.

"Some martial arts do indeed teach staff-like and even slashing motions with the spear; it all depends on how the wielder is trained. "

How they're trained??? I think it'd depend more on the spear itself. If the pole is flexible enough to wave around in two hands without accidentally breaking (would you wave around a hollow polish hussar's lance? It's hollow, so safe to say, no, it's for stabbing at high speed, only) and balanced enough to deliver strikes. And also light enough so your arms don't get tired. So it's largely the weapon rather than the martial art. Unlike anime, you can't train for everything in real life. It's about the weapon, the training only maximizes your human ability (nobody is superhuman; again, sorry anime) to use the weapon.

Once standing armies rolled around (14th century in Western Europe, I believe; probably earlier for other cultures), weapons were largely designed for specific tried and true battle tactics.

Agreed, that's poorly written. It's about the weapon, not the training.
