The current rat-related examples refer to either rats who other characters had plenty of reason to believe were wild, or to attitudes toward rats as a species.
That said, my description could do well to make clear I'm referring to wild mice and squirrels...

Should we include a domesticated version exception? There are such things as domesticated rats.
