I would say that HCE is not a stand in for Joyce. It seems pretty obvious to me that Shem the Penman is Joyce in this story. He is the writer, after all, and Joyce always seems to throw a writer into his novels (i.e. Stephen Daedalus) to stand in for him.

Tropes

I want to encourage the TV Tropes community to think of FW as Joyce's version of a tropes database, and perhaps add an index to this wiki that maps as many tropes as possible onto Joyce's framework. Not sure where/how to promote this.
