I'm pretty sure if you watch closely Blair doesn't actually touch the corpse with the pencil.
They say it bursts through your clothes when it takes you over...

Don't know if I am doing this correctly, so I apologize. When I was a kid and saw this in a drive-in theater, something struck me as a revelation immediately when it happened on screen. When Blair is giving his analysis to the group about the dog-things, he touches the bloody, wet corpse with his pencil. Then, he touches his lip with the same tip. While he's saying, "That's not dog" he licks his lip. That was the moment I thought that he HAD to be assimilated. And, since it was such a small amount, it would have happened more slowly than a all-out, full-body assault. *deposits 2 cents*
