I don't think Klinger was really trying to get out of Korea. I think he only did what he did because he wanted attention. As long as Radar was around, Klinger acted like he was bat-shit crazy so everyone would pay attention to him. Any time something came up, like "Soldier of the Month," he participated, pretending he wanted something in return. More than once, he was offered a chance to go home, but he turned it down. After Radar left, Klinger stopped acting so crazy because he was getting all the attention he needed.
It seems odd that Hawkeye was tried for mutiny when he didn't actually do it, but when he actually did do it, he wasn't tried for the crime.
