Also, there are about four bragillion little hints that Harry actually was interested in pursuing a romantic relationship with Natalie that are fairly obvious on a second reading.

May I suggest that you break up your post into paragraphs? It's an unreadable Wall of Text.

Yeah, actually, thanks for the advice. I just finished editing it down significantly.

So, does anyone else think that Harry totally should have ended up with Natalie? I just finished chapter 100, the one where Harry and Luna kiss, and I might be wrong, but I'm almost completely certain that if the fic will end with Harry in a romantic relationship with anyone, it'll be her (her as in Luna, not her as in Natalie). And that . . . bothers me. Luna dieing and Harry having to deal with her death on top of (most of) the rest of the colony’s would have led to better character and story development. Harry is always trying to deal with his problems himself, his friends are always trying to get him to open up to them and let them help him. The massacre at the werewolf colony was something that none of his friends could have really understood, and it would have taken some pretty drastic action on the part of one of his friends to convince him to let them in. Luna dieing on the grounds of Hogwarts also makes the issue of werewolf rights and the massacre at the colony more personal for Hogwarts students, which is something they seem to need in order to not be fantastic racists. By having Luna survive, and by having Harry start a relationship with her, the writer is basically giving him a pretty convincing reason to continue giving his friends the cold shoulder; no matter how much they may want to help him through it, that can’t happen if he’s only going to someone else who just suffered through the exact same thing.
Not to mention that Harry and Natalie have better chemistry, the fact that they just took a year and a half to reconcile after a bad breakup (in fairness to Natalie, Harry really could have said that better), and their relationship has been growing and changing since they met all the way back in the first book. In fact, their relationship has been the main focus of Natalie’s character since book three. All through the first four-and-a-half books, it was pretty heavily hinted that they would end up together, particularly during the first half of book five. After all that buildup, having Harry randomly suck face with Luna was kind of a slap in the face for me.
