Should Winter be considered a Magical Homeless Person? I think she ticks the boxes.

Putting Emerald in the Heroes section is innately a spoiler, especially given that she doesn't do her <a href="https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HeelFaceTurn"Heel-Face Turn</a> until season 8.

The page was created by consensus of the posters to the RWBY forum thread. I do agree that it was done too early, but consensus is how things get done on the wiki. There's no point at this stage moving her to a different page only to put her back when Volume 9 starts. However, it's something we can probably bear in mind for the future, should any further characters switch allegiance.

She's part of the main character group. The "Major Allies" are secondary characters who allies who work with the main group for a time, but they're not part of it for the full story.

Is there a trope for "cool lone warrior" in Qrow's Deconstructed Character Archetype entry?

Over 900 years, he shall recover his heartbeat. Over 90 years, he shall recover his intellect. Over 9 years, he shall recover his power. Hide / Show Replies

The only trope I can think of is I Work Alone. In fact, that DCA entry looks likes a straight example of I Work Alone, so it does look suspect.

Can I add in the "I Work Alone" trope then?

Well, no. The example is pretty much a straight example of I Work Alone, not a deconstruction. Even if it was, that would be Deconstructed Trope. It's not a character archetype.

I'm honestly not sure that he is deconstructing any archetype.

Should the quote stay in Team RWBY's general folder?

I'd get rid of it. The quotes on the page had a connected flow from top to bottom. The quote just looks weird now. :)

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Okay, I'll remove it, and if anyone feels differently, they can bring it up here.

Marrow's entry has this:

  • Deus Exit Machina: Marrow's Semblance is close to being a Story-Breaker Power, being The Paralyzer capable of stopping entire crowds with just a point of his finger, its only limitations being he needs to maintain focus, and can only freeze one area at a time. To avoid Marrow simply freezing his opponents instantly though, he tends to have reservations using it on characters he is close to. After he uses it on Vine, Elm, and Harriet while Qrow and Robyn try to cuff them, Watts hacks into an Atlesian Knight and turns it into a suicide bomber, with Marrow being the only one able to stop it from killing everyone by Taking the Bullet. Doing so shatters his aura, releasing Harriet and allowing her to take the bomb, in turn allowing Watts to hack into her airship and make sure it goes off.

Although it's written in an objective way, it's actually a speculative, subjective entry. Narratively speaking, Marrow's Aura being taken out by the exploding robot is a set-up for Vine's death just a short while later (using his Aura to contain a bomb's explosion to give his companions enough time to clear the blast area).

The creators did say that Marrow's Semblance burns through his Aura very fast, so he has to be careful with how he uses it — and that is a deliberate design choice to prevent the Semblance from becoming too powerful in the show. So, he's not hesitant to use it on friends or people he's close to, he's just generally hesitant to use it until he feels he has to.

There's nothing inherently wrong with the entry as an interpretation of what happened, but it feels like an objective trope is the wrong place for this entry to go. As written, anyway. Any suggestions on what to do with it?

Drama-Preserving Handicap maybe?

  • Not only is he a high level operative, but his power could end a fight or at least delay someone whilst the bomb was removed/they are cuffed. It has a high casting-cost (burns though aura quickly) and Marrow getting taken out in Volume 8 gets the plot moving again. Along with his moral dilemma all three handicap his value to stopping the fighting.
  • Ex Machina always sounds a bit like 'and then he tripped on a banana peel' or 'and then his gun jammed'. Both times Marrow was taken out somewhat reasonably; V7 Weiss and her Summon-Knight being too far apart and here in V8 where Watts deliberately took him out seeing as he was holding up the Enemy Civil War.

Yes, that could work. It definitely looks like a better fit than Deus Exit Machina.

It should probably be reworded to fit the new trope, as the two tropes look for different things.

Why was Incompletely Trained cut? That was just a single example singled out. Several times across every volume Penny has been in have shown that she doesn't know how to work in a team like everyone else has.

As the edit reason says, the entry chose a single instance where she was lured into a trap. Harriet baited her (to the point of calling her a "tin can"), she took just two steps forward, and that allowed the Ace-Ops to close the door, separating Penny from the others (thereby actively preventing any team-work). Penny's not the first character in this show to have ever taken the bait, and she probably won't be the last.

The only thing the show has consistently displayed about her is that Ironwood keeps trying to stop her from having friends (something that gets mentioned in Volumes 2, 3 and 7). She develops friendships despite this, and is never shown to have difficulty working in teams. However, Volume 7 establishes that the Ace-Ops has also been discouraged from forming friendships with each other; they're expected to be professional and not personal. Unlike Penny, they actively deny bonds of friendship; that denial is explicitly stated in the show to be detrimental to their ability to function as a team, which is why they're defeated by Team RWBY.

That wasn't the point trying to be made. There is a difference between being willing to work in a team and being trained to work in a team. Penny has aptitude and mentality to work with others not training to make it second nature. Even the Ace-Ops where shown that even if friendship is discouraged their teamwork is still very on point.

That wasn't even the actual example pointed out. Its after that when Nora busted down the door did she just rush the Ace-Ops again despite her teammates being near her, letting them get knocked off the bridge and her sword get taken. An even bigger one is her final fight with Cinder, even with help she again rushes her enemy alone and nearly gets her allies hit with the blowback from the fight. And her lack of concentration to check on them left her vulnerable to Cinder. That's the difference between mentality for teamwork and training for teamwork.

Yeah, which bit of the fight you wanted to talk about really doesn't come across in the example you wrote. The example you wrote describes the fight in such generic terms, it seems to be talking about the entire fight, not the very end of it (the bit you describe here is the very end of the fight, after Ace-Ops have been given orders to change their mission to capturing a sword instead of Penny — something that's very easy to do, given how Penny's swords are designed to be used).

That doesn't change the fact that you're choosing to see the events of the show the way you want to see them. You've headed so far into personal interpretation and YMMV that you need to find an audience reaction to suit your personal interpretation, and not shoehorn an objective trope into functioning as an opinion.

It's not an opinion that she has not been trained to work in a team, a skill so basic that RWBY and JNPR where doing it even before they were a team. Despite coming for the Amity tournament she is alone. The first time we see a teammate with her she is more an escort then anything. In all of Volume 7 she is used as a secret weapon to be sent out to deal with whatever problems show themselves, her best show of teamwork was done at the behest of Ruby rather then herself. She likes to work in a team, wants to work in a team but she hasn't learned how to work in a team.

Wyldchyld (Old as dirt)
Aug 2nd 2021 at 12:01:42 PM •••

Yeah, that's personal interpretation. The show hasn't claimed she's never been taught how to work in a team. You've just decided to assume that and use specific scenarios in the show to support your interpretation.

You're entitled to do that. It's something we all do. But that is what audience reactions are for; objective troping is about what's in the show, not how we fill in the gaps around the show (that would be fanon).

Okay, thank you. I've responded there and also added a link back to the discussion here, but I'd suggest torru369 also post there.

I've suggested the entry is best placed under Alternate Character Interpretation.
