Do as you want (it's a very long work, mind you) but, honestly, separating the gears (and not just Gear 5) in their own folder could help to divide the tropes into groups as in, the tropes that belongs to Luffy as a character and the tropes that belong to his techniques; similar to how some Jojo characters have the stands with their own folders
It could be useful given that Luffy has a lot of tropes
Edited by fishysaur There isn't an impossible dream, there are only people who give upWhy can’t we add the Gear 5 tropes to Luffy’s other folders? I know it’s a retcon but it’s literally just another new form like his other Gear forms.
Hide / Show RepliesMy brother in christ this is the sixth time you’ve brought this up, calm down dude
Edited by Voyd211I really don't think Gear 5th should still be kept under a separate tab.
I understand that the point is to protect new readers from spoilers, but keeping it under its own tab is counterproductive. Because even if they don't open the tab, the fact that a folder like that is even there on a page that's already full of spoiler tags already signals to new readers that some major shit happens later on regarding Luffy. And that's ignoring the fact that the folder is literally titled "Gear Five (UNMARKED SPOILERS POST-CHAPTER 1043)", which ironically spoils the very twist we're trying to protect new readers from, as well the exact chapter it happens.
While fans who aren't caught up on a series shouldn't be browsing the tv tropes page for it in the first place, all the parent pages have enough warnings about major spoilers that someone trying to avoid spoilers will have a heads-up to avoid the One Piece character pages altogether. All we're doing by putting it into a separate folder is turning Gear 5th into a Self-Fulfilling Spoiler.
Edited by Derpalooza Hide / Show RepliesIn that case, there'd be even less reason to keep it under a separate folder
I would be fine with it, only, I wouldn't delete the "imagination bit". Gear 5 effectively retconned the Gum-Gum fruit into a Human-Human fruit, giving Luffy Golden Age cartoon-style abilities instead of rubber ones (although they do appear similar) and is described as "limited solely by the user's imagination"
There isn't an impossible dream, there are only people who give upThey're just saying that the user has to be imaginative for the fruit to be useful. They don't mean the user can do anything they imagine. The cartoon stuff is just an aesthetic.
Regardless, we're all in agreement about removing the folder?
It's not just aesthetic, it's literally a change of powers (even the name of the fruit gets retconned into another one)
Anyway, it appears to be an agreement to remove the folder and combine the tropes in Gear 5 with Luffy's. However, I think we should wait for the cartoon to reveal it (a standard practice we used for other big reveals) as to spoil as less people as possible
There isn't an impossible dream, there are only people who give up- Mirror Character: To the Four Emperors. Despite currently waging war on two of them with the intention of eventually clashing with the other two, Luffy shares traits with all four of them and even the deceased Emperor Whitebeard. He is easy-going and loves to party like Shanks; is largely benevolent and fiercely protective of those he calls family or friend, like Whitebeard; is a glutton who appreciates those who feed him, like Big Mom; loves good fights with Worthy Opponents like Kaido and strongly believes in dreams like Blackbeard.
Could this work for the page?
Hide / Show RepliesIt seems more fan-reading, looking for similarities between Luffy and the emperors, than intentional on the author's part
Also, avoid terms like "currently" because it violates Examples Are Not Recent. There is no "current" in the story since it depends at which someone is reading it (it could be in the future, in the past or in the present)
There isn't an impossible dream, there are only people who give upThis entry was added, deleted and re-added just now (there are spoilers ahead).
- Physical God: The ability to manipulate your body and surroundings using Toon Physics is beyond the abilities of just about any other fruit in the series. The fact that the fruit is named after an actual god, as stated by the Five Elders, only reinforces that.
Is this considered a true example?
Edited by gjjones He/His/Him. No matter who you are, always Be Yourself. Hide / Show RepliesBased on my reading of the trope, I don't think Luffy is an example.
I think Physical God still applies on account of the Fruit explicitly emulating the powers of an actual divine being. It just needs some rewriting: flip the two subject matters around, so that the actual-god bit comes first and the Toon Physics reinforce that, if they're brought up at all.
As do I. The Five Elders flat-out state that Luffy's fruit is named after a god. We'll probably have to wait a bit to see the full extent of Luffy's full strength, but what he did to Kaido takes strength akin to a god, at the very least.
Saying that Luffy or Nika are gods is taking the Five Elders' words too literally. By that logic, one might as well say Enel, Gan Fall and Usopp are gods too.
"God" in this setting is, more often than not, merely a title for strong and/or certain revered characters. We know next to nothing about Nika, so claiming he is an actual god is jumping to conclusions way too quickly. We do know he was a warrior and had Luffy's fruit, but little beyond that. Until we have more info, I don't think the Physical God entry should be added back in.
Besides, the only aspect of the trope Luffy displays for real is Super-Strength, so that's a stretch to call him a god because of that.
Edited by totoofze472Vegapunk explains Nika is a god born from humanity's hope for liberation and freedom, and flat out calls him an ancient god reborn so long as people wish for him.
He also adds that there's no need to debate if Luffy is a god or not, implying that he might as well be considered one.
Could we add some trope examples from Gear 5’s folder and add them to Luffy? Gear 5 having a separate folder from Luffy serves as major plot twist in the story about Luffy’s Devil Fruit I get it, but I’m asking if that’s possible for us to do it.
Hide / Show RepliesConsidering the magnitude of that form, I would say not yet. But it could happen if you have a good argument to make the whole page one which nothing is to be spoil-coveted, and so the readers come at their own risk.
I have a problem with Gear 5 having it’s own folder because of two reasons, 1, there have been a few other characters that have a human-human fruit, and 2, just because Luffy’s fruit is called Nika doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a separate character.
Hide / Show RepliesIt’s separated for spoiler reasons. As in, there are loads of marked spoilers on the page anyway, but this is above and beyond them because it’s a major twist and reveal.
Edited by Voyd211I’ve done some thinking and I believe Gear 5 should be part of Luffy’s folder, just because says Human-Human Fruit doesn’t mean it should be have it’s own folder it’s more likely Gear 5 unlocks Luffy’s true power.
Since Gear 5 has it’s own folder does that imply that Gear 5 is it’s own entity.
Hide / Show RepliesIt's partly that, and partly because it's such massive, game-changing spoilers that it really can't be part of the rest of the trope list. This isn't without precedent; Tanjiro also has such a section.
Edited by Voyd211Honestly, is already so wide known that I don't see why it's a different folder, just simply spoilered entries would be enogh
I mean, the folder itself already spoils that there's some big retcon at chapter 1043
There isn't an impossible dream, there are only people who give upAccording to the Gorosei's explanation of the fruit, awakening gives him three abilities:
A) Increased Physical Strength
B) The ability to control his body Mr. Fantastic-style
C) The power to imbue surrounding objects with the properties of rubber
God fruit or not, these are the only abilities that his awakening grants. And nearly all of the things that Luffy has done in Gear 5th are ultimately just applications of the above abilities. It results in an incredibly versatile fighting style that resembles a Looney Toons episode, but calling him a reality warper seems like a massive exaggeration of what he's doing.
Edit: Formatting
Edited by Derpalooza Hide / Show Repliesas of the recent chapter, he has demonstrated the ability to take the lighting flashing in the background of their fight and summons it into his hand as a spear of lighting, apparently manipulating the perspective of the paneling that showcases the lighting flash to his advantage. This, combined with the flame effects from his red hawk move, indicates that luffy does have elemental manipulation properties beyond rubberising his and other peoples bodies and is causing cartoon effects in those who showcase shock just by being in the vicinity of his joy boy form, such as Eye Pop. Even if the stretching effects would fall under his stretching power, such a cartoony effect is clearly a step up from previous eye pops we've seen in the manga before, with multiple eyeballs instead of elongated ones. Luffy's joy boy form clear does have some ability to lean on the 4th wall and preform effects beyond merely rubberising the surroundings, which he is becoming more proficient in as the fight with Kaito continues,
Good points, but I don't believe these are sufficient enough reasons to add the trope back:
Luffy doesn't literally play on the manga's perspective, the action is just framed in this way to look stylish and quickly convey the action, since it happens on one of the last panels in the chapter.
Red Hawk was also developed and used by Luffy long before his fruit awakened, so that has nothing to do with it.
Calling him a Reality Warper at this point is premature. I believe it's much better to wait and see how far his powers stretch first (pun intended).
Edited by totoofze472There is a foreshadowing entry which says that Luffy's devil fruit not being the gum-gum and him being Joyboy have been foreshadowed from the beginning. While the last two examples are very likely true (especially since the last is recent, and thus after Oda decided to change Luffy's fruit) the other seems personal reinterpretation of stuff. What do you think?
There isn't an impossible dream, there are only people who give up Hide / Show RepliesMy bad for the link within the link. I meant to remove that.
Hide / Show RepliesWhy do we have Gear 5 as a separate page shouldn’t Gear 5 be on Luffy since it’s his newest transformation?
Hide / Show Replieslikely because it is such a spoiler and incredibly more powerful version, there is no easy way to add all those parts without a lot of tropes which give spoilers by their simple name.
I still feel like all the Gear 5 tropes should be on Luffy because to me personally it’s like the folder on Gear 5 feels like one of those folders where’s is a separate entity and Gear 5 is not a separate entity.
Yeah, I would put them all on Luffy's folders. I mean, the chapter is officially out and everyone who reads tropes from any works should be wary that they could run into spoilers
It seems we're doing far too much to avoid spoiling people, especially with all these "Spoiler Page" warnings
Edited by fishysaur There isn't an impossible dream, there are only people who give upHow about making a separate folder for the Fruit instead? Given some recent revelations, it's almost a character in its own right.
Honestly, I prefer having a separate folder. Prevents spoiling any new fans without the extra work of creating a new page.
I vote keeping Nika as it's own folder.
The Elder Stars vaguely implied that the fruit has it's own intelligence distinct from whoever eats it, so it will eventually qualify as it's own character.
If I'm doing something wrong, please PM me as your first response. I'm not here to screw up anyone's hard work.Yeah, I think keeping it as its own folder is fine, because it’s the biggest reveal in the series and changes everything we thought we knew about Luffy.
I was supposed to answer to someone but started a new discussion instead. Pardon me.
Edited by Potman
Now that the anime has reached Gear 5th, there's no longer any reason for Gear 5th in its own folder. Can just remove the Gear 5th folder and put it in the rest of the page?
