I’m against changing it at all since all changes to the line up are major spoilers. Whitebeard being replaced by Blackbeard may be a case of a Late-Arrival Spoiler, but still.
I agree, better keep the four emperors after the time-skip (even before could be fine, but only 2 of them were fully revealed at the time)
There isn't an impossible dream, there are only people who give upShould either the Blackbeard Pirates or the Whitebeard Pirates be moved to this page, or even both? Both if they were merged back here would not give this page enough bytes to need a split.
Should we keep the spoiler tag for the first New Emperor? It was already announced in the anime
Okay, seems we have a misuse with the foil entry (I'm taking Kaido's but will consider the Big Mom's as well)
- Foil: To fellow Emperor Big Mom: They are Emperors with the least personal connections to Luffy and the last to be shown. They play roughly the same role in the story. They are both epitome of Morganian pirates. However, they contrast each other in important ways:
- Visually, Kaido is extremely muscular, the idea of an alpha male turn Up To Eleven. Big Mom is obese and radiates an air of decadence.
- Kaido has a drinking problem and his Establishing Character Moment is a drunken rampage laced with Black Comedy. Big Mom has an eating disorder and her rampage was Played for Drama.
- Kaido is a Perpetual Frowner while Big Mom is a Perpetual Smiler.
- Big Mom is (when sane) Pragmatic Evil with a mercantile mindset. Kaido is all about destruction and death to sate his boredom and find something that can kill him.
- Big Mom is hedonistic with powers over life while Kaido is a Death Seeker.
- Totland, especially Whole Cake Island is a trippy Crapsaccharine World while most of Wano, especially Onigashima is straight up Crapsack World.
- In term of influence, everything about Big Mom is an Alice Allusion, from Western Literature. Everything about Kaido is distinctively traditional Japanese: from the Wutai setting, to his Eastern Dragon power, to the Whole-Plot Reference to Japanese classics such as Momotaro and 47 Ronins.
- Kaido has only three direct subordinates who are each very powerful, but they insult, berate, and demean each other. He has only one child, who hates him and is looking to break free at the first opportunity. Big Mom has 85 children, 70 of whom are her direct subordinates, where most of them tend to get along with each other as a family does.
- Big Mom rules over an island where, for whatever other flaws there are, there's food in abundance (since pretty much everything is edible) and nobody goes hungry. Kaido, on the other hand, rules over an island where most of the residents are starving as a direct result of him poisoning the food supply.
- Big Mom will take underhanded tactics, lie, or backstab opponents. Kaido fights fairly and is straightforward with his actions.
- Big Mom is an Invincible Villain who shrugs off attacks casually and sometimes even unintentionally, and Luffy couldn't even lay a finger on her. Kaido, although Nigh-Invulnerable, is a major damage sponge who takes multiple barrages of attacks from Luffy and other characters.
Two foils are two characters which the story itself contrast to highlight their respective's traits, and usually tend to be paired. However, in this case, it seems like it's just the fans who are noticing the differences (including some very specific ones) instead of the story underlining them. Which tend to happen a lot with foil entries
In my opinion, the story hasn't shown Big Mom and Kaido in contrast to anything unlike, for instance, Otohime and Fisher Tiger, what do you think?
Edited by fishysaur There isn't an impossible dream, there are only people who give upSince Blackbeard's name is spelled "Teech" and not "Teach" in both the VIZ manga and Funimation subtitles, should we change it?
Hide / Show RepliesWait really? The inspiration was obvious, how did they get that so wrong?
I checked the wiki, and it said that the uncut Funi DVDs spell his name Teach. So we have the dub using "Teach", and we have the manga and simulcast subs using "Teech".
Since at least one official translation uses Teach, I say we keep it that way.
To be honest, I'm not sure what the protocol is when there are conflicting official translations. Do any of them take precedence over another?
I'm fine with either Teech or Teach.
I prefer Teach since that’s how we spell the real life pirate’s name.
I'm cool with that.
That said, I'm still curious about how this site handles conflicting official translations.
We are supposed to use the most recent translation. There are no rules about what happens when there are multiple recent translations. This caused the Dragon Ball fandom on this wiki to have a lot of arguments caused by Viz and Funi using very different names (manga Kuririn vs anime Krillin, manga Tenkaichi Budōkai vs anime World Martial Arts Tournament, etc.).
The end result of the arguments is "first come, first serve" - that is, the translation used by first example on the page is the translation all the other examples on the same page use (unless it is something that only happened in the anime, then you must use the anime names). Someone who does nothing but change one translation to another should be told to knock it off.
So far, the English One Piece translations mostly agree with each, with any contradictions usually being minor, typically L/R confusion (manga Zolo/Nefeltari/Roguetown vs sub Zoro/Nefeltari/Logue Town vs dub Zoro/Nefertari/Logue Town), though alternate spellings do happen (manga Marijoa vs anime Mariejois). There are rare cases that have one translation using unlocalised names (sub Sakura Kingdom vs manga/dub Cherry Blossom Kingdom). Just pick one translation and stick with it (keep in mind that the dub has only barely started Dressrosa as of this post, so we do not know the dub names of characters and locations debuting past that point).
Edited by ChytusRegarding the Fish-Fish Fruit mentioned in chapter 999: Big Mom stated that she 'gave' it to him, but there wasn't anything stating that he actually consumed it. However, there are already some tropes being written under the assumption that he did eat it. Should we refrain from associating him with it until something more concrete is confirmed (like an infobox), or should we just assume he did eat it?
Hide / Show RepliesAlright f'sho. I just felt like people were jumping the gun a bit since we didn't get that little infobox that Oda always puts when introducing a character and their Devil Fruit, nor did we have some other character revealing it (like Law did with Doflamingo).
Just wondering, when would it be appropriate to change the page image to reflect the new four emperors?
