There's been some disagreement about whether or not the Anti-Villain trope applies to Shigaraki, so I'd like to open a discussion about it. Opinions, anyone?
Hide / Show RepliesTomura doesn't want to destroy society for his friends. He wants to do it for himself. He would like to have his friend have a good life afterwards, but hate is what drives him, not their lives or anything else positive. A sad backstory and a few connections does not make him less of a villain.
"When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all" Futurama, GodfellasShigaraki is a tragic character, as I explained when justifying removing the trope some months ago. But having some decent qualities to him, like being a good friend, does not diminish what actually drives him: hatred. As Geostomp said, he wants to destroy the world not for any noble reason or goal, but because of how HE was hurt. This includes billions of innocents if he can get his hands on them, all in an attempt to get even for being rejected. That's as blatantly evil as you get.
Could we add Physical God to Shigaraki since he’s been stated to be more Powerful than All For One?
I feel like this page should have unmarked spoilers at this point. Most of the applicable tropes to Shigaraki currently deal with heavy, HEAVY spoilers for the manga and it becomes a headache sifting through so many spoiler tags.
Just following up on the discussion here with Emerald Sky : https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/query.php?parent_id=93424&type=att
Where would you like to start first?
Hide / Show RepliesLinks apparently don't work. The discussion is called "A Concerning Trend" over on ATT. Long story short, vidkid and I discussed the swath of entries/parts of entries deleted here and on the League's pages. vid agrees they might have been a bit hasty in deleting them and we've talked about the contentiousness and possible speculation of some of the entries on both pages. We're hoping to discuss it to try to lessen the cycle of add-delete-added by someone else. As such, some entries may be due for re-addition and/or rewording.
First, let's start with three that were deleted:
Is Shigaraki an example of these tropes?
(Edit: Spoiler tags apparently do not work in discussions so watch out for unmarked spoilers I guess.)
Edited by EmeraldSkyHi Emerald,
Sorry for the late reply.
I think a big point of disagreement seems to be along the lines of Humanisation vs Morality.
To bypass this disagreement, it seems to me that the best solution is to look at the entries that lean too much one way or the other, and reword them in a manner that can appease both parties.
I think at this stage Moral Myopia could possibly be put back, with perhaps a reference to Black-and-White Insanity or something along those lines - as the myopic nature of his worldview comes from the fact that by involving non-combatant citizens in his war on Hero Society, he is effectively exacerbating the same societal issues which he criticises the pro-heroes for not addressing.
Agree with Moral Myopia. Like with Toga's entry, Hypocrite doesn't seem necessary since Moral Myopia covers it.
Nice! Now about Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist... I am not sure if Shigaraki applies since he isn't trying to pass himself off as fighting for a "noble" cause (unlike Dabi) but I think some members of the PLF like Re-Destro (and maybe Spinner?) seem to think Shigaraki is fighting for a "good" cause? (Am I remembering that correctly?) Though that might be a different trope I can't think of.
Edited by EmeraldSkyYeah, I'd say Shigaraki actually HATES actual Well Intentioned Extremists and sees them as hypocrites. Like "so what's you're saying is YOU'RE allowed to kill and cause pain and suffering towards those you despise but I do it and suddenly it's unjust?"
Should bakugou also be Shigaraki’s Arch-Enemy for kidnapping him and for trying to force him to join the league of villains?
Edited by Duncril01 Hide / Show RepliesI'd think so. But this is only slightly hinted at rather than anything overt. They do make decent foils to one another. Bakugou and Shigaraki also have similar arcs. Where, in order to succeed, they have to learn to treat their allies less like disposable extras and more like... well, friends. Like Deku, they grew up looking up to All Might. They both start out with extreme anger issues and threw tantrums when things didn't go their way. But these could just be inevitable coincidences due to both of them basically being Izuku's primary counterparts. Bakugou also says he regards Shiggy as his main target for kidnapping him and bringing about the end of All Might. AND, the original ending planned for the series was Bakugou and Deku sharing OFA and teaming up against Shigaraki. So... yeah, I'd say there's a good case to be made. I personally would like them to be arch-enemies. But... I dunno. Feels a bit like we have to dig for it. Who knows, maybe it's just one of those threads Hori lost track of. Sorta like Spinner's grudge towards Iida.
Can we put The Starscream trope to Shigaraki since he and All For One was fighting for control over their shared body?
Should we remove The Dragon Co-Dragons and Dragon Ascendent for Shigaraki because if he was in a Big Bad Duumvirate with stain shouldn’t he be in a Big Bad Duumvirate with All For One since he was leading the league of villains from the outside while All For One was monitoring him from the shadows?
Based on how his character has developed and his appearance would it be fair to add the practically Joker trope leaning towards Heath Ledgers performance
