Is that the flashback conversation with Kyouraku? I thought that was about Yamamoto's Bankai form. I thought the implication was that his full Bankai form caused so much damage that he vowed to never again do such a thing... so when the time came against Yhwach, he kept his vow and died instead.
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.
