LeftHanging: A WordOfGod message board post by Lead Level Designer David Nashty, confirmed by Karen Traviss, explained that [[spoiler: New Hope was a project attempting to find a cure for Imulsion sickness (rustlung), which posed a major problem because human civilization had become completely dependent upon Imulsion for energy. The [=COG=] had discovered a Locust Drone (a creature long thought mythical) and noted its resistance to Imulsion, and attempted to infuse its DNA into humans to give them the same resistance. The results were the Sires (Imulsion miners who mutated uncontrollably after being injected due to their pre-existing high Imulsion exposure), and the Children (children who were also experimented on, and whose infusion with Locust DNA proved more successful). The Sires and Myrrah were actually fully explained in a message board post by Lead Level Designer David Nashty, whose content was confirmed by Karen Traviss. However, the post was deleted by Epic and whether or not they choose to make it the \\\"official\\\" plot likely depends on any future books, comics, etc. (see LeftHanging above for the full explanation.)\\\"

I deleted this off due to it not yet being confirmed or denied by Epic yet. Even though both Nashty and Traviss were heavily involved in the game, if Epic is deleting the posts they made trying to clear things up, then it shouldn\\\'t been seen as WordOfGod yet, because in the end, Epic, the company, has the final say about Gears canon, and if they were okay with what they posted being canon, it wouldn\\\'t have been deleted.

Course, if I\\\'m heavily disagreed with, I\\\'ll quickly remove my objection.
