They're basically parentheticals, so they have the same rules — in this case, that rule would be "it depends on context".

Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing.

I'm curious since I've only ever seen them after punctuation,note  but I came across an editor who's insistantly put them before punctuationnote .

I put them after punctuation. Otherwise it creates that awkward space between a word and the period.

That's my thoughts on it as well, but the editor apparently disagrees since they reverted my edit. I don't wanna edit-war, so I figured I'd bring it up here.
