"The Scrappy" examples all have to go through a dedicated thread in the forums. I found this post there.

Doesn't seem to have been much discussion. Reality TV's a fun one because of the real people vs personas issue.

Its often said that Reality Tv aren't 100% reality. There are some fakeness in them to some extant.

Reality TV is not Real Life for the purposes of the No Real Life Examples, Please! policy.

Updating this, as it's linked from comments in some wiki pages but policy has changed:

As per this crowner, we're now only allowing The Scrappy and similar tropes to apply to Reality Show contestants if they are acknowledged within the show.

This is because of the difficulty of separating the reaction to the person (performer) from the reaction to the contestant (character). Even if not mentioned in the example, aspects like social media posts, tabloid headlines and appearances in other shows may impact audience reaction — all of which moves it firmly into Real Life Troping.
