Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
"The Scrappy" examples all have to go through a dedicated thread in the forums. I found this post there.
Doesn't seem to have been much discussion. Reality TV's a fun one because of the real people vs personas issue.
Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving. -Terry PratchettIts often said that Reality Tv aren't 100% reality. There are some fakeness in them to some extant.
Reality TV is not Real Life for the purposes of the No Real Life Examples, Please! policy.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanUpdating this, as it's linked from comments in some wiki pages but policy has changed:
As per this crowner, we're now only allowing The Scrappy and similar tropes to apply to Reality Show contestants if they are acknowledged within the show.
This is because of the difficulty of separating the reaction to the person (performer) from the reaction to the contestant (character). Even if not mentioned in the example, aspects like social media posts, tabloid headlines and appearances in other shows may impact audience reaction — all of which moves it firmly into Real Life Troping.
This might be a stupid question, but I was unable to find it actually answered for sure anywhere.
I see that when using The Scrappy, the bottom of the page says No Real Life Examples, Please!. Does this extend to reality TV as well? As in, the YMMV pages of reality TV shows should NOT have any form of The Scrappy (including Rescued from the Scrappy Heap) listed on the page at all? (As in using contestants or participants of the show as examples).
I ask because recently someone deleted all examples and text of The Scrappy and Rescued from the Scrappy Heap from the YMMV page of Hell's Kitchen (quite a lot, since it was an accumulation of 17 seasons worth). If this edit is valid and correct, then I assume there are probably many other reality shows that require this clean-up on their YMMV pages as well.
Again, sorry if a stupid question, just wanted confirmation and the red or green light to clean up other reality TV YMMV pages. Thanks!
