Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread

"players" would make more sense than "performers" because they are not performers and are not even employees. "humans" would make even more sense to me, because either of the two are just Fan Nickname
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupI also support using the "player" terminology.
He/His/Him. No matter who you are, always Be Yourself. So should that change be applied to just this page or every single instance of the word "performer" (referring to the main protagonists of TADC) on this wiki? Because the latter would take too much time and energy to apply.
I'm just a psycho, babe! Come and go out my mind. I didn't lose it, babe! There wasn't much to find.I dunno why would it take too long, and would be a natural thing to do.
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupDoes that mean I should or should not do the latter?
I'm just a psycho, babe! Come and go out my mind. I didn't lose it, babe! There wasn't much to find.Since there's a disagreement over terminology, it'd probably be best to wait comments from more than two people, preferably also from someone who has edited the page. If several people agree on something, it would be the go-ahead sign.
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupI think it may be best to bring in both of the tropers. Edit Wars are quite serious, all things considered.
~immblueversion and ~Random Information, please settle this.
I'm just a psycho, babe! Come and go out my mind. I didn't lose it, babe! There wasn't much to find.As the history shows, I was the one to label them as "performers" in the first place, before the show premiered. It was my conclusion based on the original teaser that the show would center on circus-related acts, rather than a wider range of adventures.
Because we now know more, "performers" seems like a narrow term, if not an inaccurate one, so I changed it to the more all-encompassing "players".
To be honest, though, I forgot that I made this same change from "performer" to "player" months ago, so I didn't realize I was warring. I'm sorry for my negligence.
If we want an alternative, how about "The Funny Circus Gang" like Caine calls them in the latest promo? Or, since it may just be a one-time thing he calls them, we can shorten it to "The Circus Gang" or simply "The Gang" to make it more general.
Is there a UK/US difference here? I don't know the work, but you describe "players" as "more all-encompassing". To me, players are either players of a game, players of musical instruments, or actors; "performers" is the more all-encompassing term as it covers any kind of performance for entertainment.
The work is set in a circus VR game, and all the "performers" as we've called them are people who've been trapped in the game.
Also, they don't perform for or entertain anyone in the story. If anything, they're the ones being entertained by getting sent on adventures by the game's ringmaster (it's a Bread and Circuses type scenario to help them deal with being trapped forever in a digital world).
But if "players" doesn't work, my above proposition stands.
tbf The Gang sounds fair and neutral
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupI guess it really depends on what the players/performers intended purpose for the circus is. Is it to entertain the main player of the game, or are they the players themselves? If I'm being totally honest, I literally have no memory of making this edit, but I apologize for accidentally edit-warring anyways.
The episode unambiguously says they are trapped humans, aka the players stuck against their will.
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupSo, what's the consensus? I'm in favor of calling them "The Circus Gang" or "The Gang" while addressing them individually as humans or players, since that's how they're presented in the show rather than performers.
On another note, are there any threads devoted to the show's pages in the forum? I've been meaning to clean them up for a while once the edits became less frequent (overly detailed examples, non-recurring and non-character tropes in the character page, image and header quote discussions, etc.), but with the second episode coming within the week, things are bound to get busy again.
I also mean to dial back my impulsive changes because of this discussion.
If you want the cleanup thread, it's here, and if you want the New Media thread, it's here.
I'm just a psycho, babe! Come and go out my mind. I didn't lose it, babe! There wasn't much to find.Bump. Anyone else? There's 2 days before episode 2 releases.
Edited by moxeden I'm just a psycho, babe! Come and go out my mind. I didn't lose it, babe! There wasn't much to find. The description for The Amazing Digital Circus E2: Candy Carrier Chaos! mentions "The gang are BACK", while in the preview Caine calls them "funny circus gang", so I think "the gang" has been fairly consistent so far.
TroperWall / WikiMagic Cleanup
I think an edit war happened on Characters. The Amazing Digital Circus over the terms "performer" and "player" when refering to the main protagonists:
On 16 October 2023, immblueversion changed the main protagonists' section header from "The Performers" to "Players".
On 18 October 2023, RandomInformation changed it to just "Performers", as "[they] believe they're more often described as this".
On 26 April 2024, immblueversion changed said section header, and every instance of the word "performer" on the page, to "player", with the reasoning that "[t]he "performers" don't actually perform at the circus, so it's an obsolete term".
So, which term should be used for the main protagonists? "Performer" or "player"? "Performer" is the term used more often by the fans, but it's a misnomer, given that they don't perform in the Circus. "Player" would be a more accurate term, but it isn't used as much.
