That sounds like pertinent context in theory, since one of the required criteria (the reason it's YMMV) is that the audience feels sorry for the character. Can't speak to whether the phrasing is gushing or not.
On many The Woobie entries, I've seen sentences or something that basically say that "you'll feel sorry for the poor thing" or something similar. Is this Word Cruft and/or gushing?
