Rather than try to boost one skill a ton, try to add another skill like Evasion +1

Well, you can...? If that skill goes to the 20s. Not all of them do! Most skills only go to +10, after which raising them any further is pointless. The points you put into a skill only matter if the name changes - you can check that on the Skill Details screen by pressing Y. Even then it's sometimes not much of a benefit, so if another skill might be nicer to have... Yeah.

Evasion +1 is a useful skill to nab. So is Sharpener. Artillery if you're a gunlance makes everything better. KO King is worthless, and Maestro is situational but nice.

The absolute best skill in the game is Sharpness +1, though. It's virtually mandatory towards the endgame unless you use one of the few weapons that don't benefit from it.

... Or, y'know, are an archer. Then you want Load Up instead.

But at early stages of the game it's not super-necessary that you plan this stuff out. Just use armor sets that look cool, finish their skills and remove bad skills, etc.

Once you get to G-Rank, I recommend downloading a thing called Athena's Armor Search System (Athena's ASS for short lol). If you want any particular skills, it'll tell you what armor pieces, decorations, and charms you need to get all those sweet skills.

To farm for Enduring Charms late game, you want to make a Gathering set. The best way to get Charms is the G2 Rathalos quest: Get Feylene Explorer from Seafood and Drinks, equip any Insect Glaive (even if it's just a Bone Glaive) mine and gather everything in the secret area, jump off, and mine every Gold mining spot you can find.

After that, mount the Rathalos twice to break its back, and complete the subquest. Sell anything you don't need for lods e mone, and presto.

[up] is talking about 4U. Tri has neither sub-quests nor Insect Glaives, and I think it doesn't have a G-rank.

But since charm runs are mentioned: Eating for Explorer and using a gathering set, then getting killed three times is a valid strategy during the time you have a new area unlocked but not the gather tour quest for it.

It's actually really usefull to bring an upgraded glaive to the Rathalos run. Doesn't require much effort to break all of his parts, so extra money and chances on his rare drops. The normal gathering nodes can also give you some charms and at least the rar 8 also have good skills.

So, do you have to look at your armour's weaknesses in order to know what weapons to use against certain monsters?

I could swear that the Hunter's notes said what they were weak against.

I don't remember if 3 has them, but 4 has little info notebooks you can buy from the vendor that are like field guides to monster families. Lists some behaviours and ecology stuff, sometimes weaknesses. Some of them are fun to read.

Overall it's an useful guideline. But for elemental damage hit zones are what counts. Every zone has a hit modifier that decides how much of your damage "goes through". If a monster's head has a fire resistence of 35, it takes 35% percent of the fire damage as hp damage.

35 is actually really weak to fire, most monster's hit zones will have modifiers between 5 and 15 across the board with one or two weak spots. Some monsters will be completly immune to certain elements.

Armor does not reflect that. At least in 4U, every piece of a set has the same resistance. Shagaru Magala armor has -6 dragon resistance on every piece, but there is a massive difference between hitting it's head and it's legs.

Alright. Thanks.

Guess I'll check some different websites to jog my memory on weaknesses.

Edit: Now that I'm back in the hunting game, where are the best places to farm for Carpenter Bugs and Killer Beetles?

I hate that these guys are the ones you can't breed in the farm.....

Or did I just never get to the point where it was possible?

So I ended up getting what I needed through a lot of work, patience, and some good luck anyway.

Go figure. I just made some Wroggi Gunner armour, and now I want to make the Ludroth Blade master Armour. I've more or less re-gotten the hang of using specific weapons, so now it's just a matter of getting back into proper hunting. I kill a few more barroths (and build my cash back up) and then get back into things proper. I also need to start upgrading my armour (I got plenty of spheres, though mostly level one but still).

Hoohah.

By the way, how do you do the first person view with Heavy Blowguns? I forgot, and now I keep going into it by accident.

Goddamn G-rank Stygian Zinogre is mean. Three quests so far, all wipeouts.

Seems like i've hit the end of my run.

If you're talking about the one in 4U, my advice is to use a weapon with fast attacks and a quick sheathe animation, wait for it to use an attack that won't spawn dragon balls, and mount it when it's fully charged as much as possible. I managed to avoid getting carted even once after I came up with this strategy. It wouldn't hurt to invest in Evasion+ and Dragon Resistance either.

In my case, my armor also had Earplugs, and Zinogre likes to taunt or roar when you enter the area, so you could cheese it that way. Overall, you have to be very patient with Stygian Zinogre.

@Ogo: You're gonna have to zone him hard. If he attacks, take the precious second after the attack to nail him. When he does the walk-charge, wait until you see the first thunderbolt strike in front of him, then smack his face. This was my wake-up boss for me, and he's definitely not easy.

Greatsword and HH work good against him, to my knowledge. If this is 4U, mounting him also tends to dispel his aura more times than not.

Also because I just beat him I'm shitting some tips for Furious Rajang.

  • Don't go gung ho, ever.

  • He can cover a lot of distance very quickly

  • His tail is a super weak point, hit it before ducking out

  • He's not too weak to shock traps, but use them anyway because they work.

  • His arms are diamonds, bring Mind's Eye

  • In Super Saiyan mode, he's extremely weak to Pitfall Traps. In normal mode, he's completely immune to them.

expanding soon

  • His most dangerous attack is his punch-combo, with plenty range and power. Inversely, when he does his rock throw, he's super vulnerable.

  • Hit his tail by god HIT IT

I'm probably one of the only people still playing 3U on this thread I think.

Almost got what I need for Ludroth Blade Master armour.

After that, I'll get back to hunting regularly, and start gathering materials for new weapons.

There's a Monster Hunter theme for the 3DS menu that's free for a limited time.

I did manage to get a handle on Stygian Zinogre. After a while all that would get me was if he started the spin attack too close for me to react. That thing was an OHKO, but only worked if it was right on top of me, otherwise i could block.

But now i need to go to G3 just for one part for one weapon :-/. Ugh, this game.

One of my most nerve-wracking hunts I had was against a Furious Rajang. I was hunting with a group when the connection was broken, leaving me along with the pissed off monkey. It ended up being a very close battle that cost me almost every single healing potion I brought, but I had broken both horns and I wasn't about to quit after that. I did manage to bring the Rajang down, thankfully...

...But I didn't get the ghoulish horns. Damn you, desire sensor.

So I'm working on upgrading my weapons. I can either upgrade my current lance (which I don't use to much compared to the gun lance, but am trying to get back into) into the Thane Lance +, the Drill Lance, or the Azure Crest.

I can also upgrade my current long sword from the Iron Gospel to either the Chain Slaughter, or the Wroggi Sword.

With the Lance I'm leaning towards the Drill Lance, and with the Long Sword towards the Chain Slaughter. Both are lightning elemental based, which I'm rather lacking in. I'm leaning towards the Sword more, cause I rather like the Long Sword. It's one of my favourite weapons.

That being said, I have no Light crystals right now, and the Wroggi Sword has a slot and gives off the poison element. That's too useful if you ask me. I only lack Issium and a second Monster Bone L.

For the Lances, the Azure Crest inflicts Sleep, but I don't have any of the elements needed for it right now. I can however, upgrade my Thane Lance into a Thane Lance Plus through copius murder of more Great Wroggis.

So which weapon do you guys think I should go for right now?

Note: This is for Tri Ultimate, just to be clear.

Furious Rajang is a monster you REALLY need to lockdown to beat. He can be toppled surprisingly easy, but unlike other monsters where they need to go through three "struggle" animations before getting up, Butthurt Rajang only needs two; and it goes by fast.

Well that's pretty unfair.

Stab him in the ass. Then he'll really be butthurt.evil grin

Getting serious, I never got an answer to my question about Lances and Long Swords.

Also, What's a good way to get more Royal Ludroth Claws? I need three: 2 to complete the Ludroth Blademaster armour, and 1 for an upgrade to my Ludroth based Light Bow-gun.

When I farmed fury, my group got him actually down 5 minutes consistently. He is still very annoying, throwing you through the room and staggering you at the end of his combos. Luckily I had Tremor Resistance in my armor - 5 free slots are sweet.

[up]I think the Iron line of longswords ends better than the wroggi one, for the lance just go for the best raw/sharpness combination. At this point in the game it doesn't matter all that much, most stuff will be really easy to get later so you can go for whatever weapon you want. You should make a Brachydios weapon once they're available, slime is very powerfull 3U.

You probably get more claws by breaking, well, his claws. For everything you break there's an extra slot in the quest rewards with it's own loot table. Some items can only be gained that way.

I see. Okay they, I'll go with the Chain Lightning for now.

Good news is I just finished my new Ludroth Armour. Still need more to get my Royal Torrent.

But that's no problem.

Kill a few more Royal Ludroths and it should be possible.

I'm also gonna need to make a water based Melee weapon at some point to take advantage of that increase in water attacks.

Need more Huskberries for general stuff, and need to do more fishing for Whitefish among other things. Also need to kill more fish period. Don't do enough of that. Oh, and I need Broken shells to make more Harpoons. I only have five.

Stabbing him in the ass is actually extremely effective: His tail is his biggest weak point, and I think cutting it permanently disables his Super Saiyan

gee sounds familiar
