So, Monster Hunter Tri is coming out in the States this month. So far, my only experience with the series has been playing Monster Hunter for the PS 2 for like... an hour. That said, it looks interesting, and looking over the something about it really appeals to the biology geek in me. So, I'm wondering, is anyone else planning on picking it up? I've heard it's primarily multiplayer-focused, so having people to play with would be nice. Also, overall, how is the series?

I pre-ordered it and got that demo. Seems pretty good, but I think the demo has you going against game you're not ready for.

From what I've seen, it's not an easy game as it is.

I've played the demo. I think it just takes practice and stratigy to do it. I can beat the Great Jaggi with a longsword without dieing but the three star mission... not so much. A dragon? Seriously? I can't kill that!

Acid Rain is ruining the environment! Don't persue the dying in bad weather!

At the risk of sounding absurd, I'd say 3 is the Growing the Beard game for the series. The previous ones were good (although the original for PS 2 was an awkwardly-controlling false start whose poor reception kept the later, superior console titles from coming to the US until now), but this is probably the first one I'd honestly call a great game.

Numerous interface and gameplay improvements, some truly unique new or reworked monsters (such as the Altaroth, which will gather items from certain types of gather points... and can then be killed for an item you wouldn't be able to get otherwise... or the newly retuned Kelbis whose horns are acquired by stunning them, then carving when stunned), something actually resembling a plot this time... an upgradable village that gets more and better services as you progress (as opposed to a village that was static besides an upgradeable farm)...

Bowguns are finally reworked to be comparable to melee weapons in customizability and upgrade mechanics... a "free hunt" area where you can hunt and gather as much as you want without time limits or death penalties... new "subquests"... it's all-around a pretty great game.

Quite. I'm enjoying it a lot so far. Just got ahold of a bowgun.

I like the lance. Absolute defense.

I'm thinking of giving the lance a try later on.

But right now, I'm shooting things. Pewpewpew.

I've been wanting to get this ever since I first heard about it. So, it's like, the best one in the series, huh? Dammit...I've still got a bunch of stuff backlogged...

I picked it up today and just started playing. Since I can't use adHoc Party on my Play Station 3, this will be my Monster Hunter of choice.

I hope you get tiny bits of eggshell in all your omelettes for the rest of your life!

Protip: The King's Frill, necessary for many armors, can only be gotten as a quest reward, and only if you break the Great Jaggi's frill.

Capcom did a damn good job with most of the aspects of the game, including the ads. I just wish there was a tad more variety in the monsters.

Then again, I was a Phantasy Star Online player for a long time... So I can't exactly complain.

So Tri doesn't have the do these certain required quests to rank up thing right? It just increases your hunter rank by how much guild points you have, eh?

@Knighted: You have to do all the quests in each rank to rank up.

I got a Switch Axe and upgraded it Attack Power of near or over 600, and I'm currently fighting the 4th large monster. He traps you in mud.

Switch Axe is pretty Badass as it acts as both an axe and a Great Sword, The Sword generates powered up (red aura) swings also, but it has a meter of it's own on how much I can attack.

I also want to get Ludroth equipment, the only problem is that I have to kill a lot of Royal Ludroths to get the materials. I do have the boots though

I just got ahold of the Bnahabara equipment. It's not the best, but it's outright my favorite looking set.

Well, I goit it this afternoon, and after a long gaming session, I managed to kill the great Jaggia. Not that hard, once you learn that dodging is about as essential to staying alive as breathing.

And the bowgun is a pretty good weapon. Beats the crap out of the great sword, at least. Honestly, is that thing supposed to be so slow, or am I doing something wrong?

Ah, whatever. Bowgun own pretty much everything anyway.
