Those characters weren't removed from the Disgaea 4 cover for spoilers. If you look at the cover, they made the decision to have the characters by fairly large on it, which meant they would need to remove several characters so that the ones they kept could fit.

And NISA also used the art for Disgaea 4 for all the chibis showing the full cast of the game for their limited edition, not just the manual. Not sure if they did that for previous entries.

Maybe it'll actually be open world this time around.

And they'll get rid of that terrible attempt at Black Comedy Rape.

Obviously the instance itself won't still be around if this is a new story.

Can't say much about its general taste in humor, though.

I know why people think this could be a sequel, but I don't think it's that likely.

Considering how long it took them to complete a scaled-down version of their original vision and how long it took for the game to have even a remote profit (assuming they ever did) a somewhat enhanced port seems far more likely to me, so I'm going on the assumption that this is what Revival is.

I honestly have no idea how that'd work. The tone between the two is pretty much completely opposite.

It'd probably lean more towards a Disgaean tone at first, with the more serious Megaten characters being straight men to the ones who manage the wackiness better. As the game wears on, it would become darker and more melodramatic until we've got a Fear The Great situation on our hands, with occasional silly asides.

So I guess what I'm saying is that the Disgaea tone would probably work.

Alternatively, seeing Disgaea characters played dead straight as terrifying demons would be hilarious in a meta-sense.

Anyway, it doesn't look like the Disgaea content is very meaningful.

If you can put up with the game-crashing bugs and the risk of over-heating your PS 3, then the Witch and 100 Knight is a pretty solid game with interesting characters.

It's... okay-ish? Haven't gotten especially far in it myself, but the game really suffers from its perpetual bird's-eye camera (it's kinda impressive how often the titular Metallia in particular just ends up being a giant black circle with two legs), and the combat, while nothing outright terrible, certainly highlights how much of a first-try attempt this kind of game is for NIS (so far the homing staff that you get by the second chapter just invalidates a ton of normally very threatening enemies, regardless of it being exponentially weaker than any ordinary melee weapon). Plus the incentives for keeping your dungeon runs longer are rarely anything notable, though that's probably for the best considering the NISA crash that's still floating around.

As for the story, aside from the infamous very first chapter, the story seems fairly serviceable. Still mostly just an outlet for more Comedic Sociopathy, mind, but Metallia herself ends up on the receiving end of it pretty often, which helps keep such a central character from being too unlikable.

For anybody who's interested, a Twitch streamer did a full playthrough of Disgaea 5's main chapters with some of the dialogue translated.

Introduction Chapter 1 Chapter 2 and some of Chapter 3 Chapter 3 to Chapter 6 Chapter 7 to most of Chapter 9 Rest of Chapter 9 to some of Chapter 10 Chapter 10 to Chapter 13 Chapter 14 to Chapter 16 Final Boss fight + Ending

Also, can't speak Japanese, but is Metallia directly playable now? The impression I got was that she was basically your quest giver in the original.

Revival's an updated PS4 port, yes. A sequel was announced shortly afterwards, but we don't have any concrete information on that as of yet.

The main selling point of this appears to be that you can now get an unlockable mode where you finally play as Metallia herself, as seen above.
