That's just how the meme goes; it isn't really a continuity error, but a lot of people found it a really weak explanation for his death.

Can Emmeryn assist them? She's a well-grounded individual who lends a certain gravity to it. She'd make quite an impact.

https://kantopia.wordpress.com/2017/04/27/fire-emblem-echoes-dengeki-developer-interview-april-2017/

Some interesting tidbits in the interview:

Q: Mr. Yamagami, as the producer striving to ever expand the audience, what sort of plans do you have with this game?

Yamagami: This time, the aim is to get the fans that joined the Fire Emblem series since Awakening to be made aware of the fact there are indeed games that came before it. As such, we wanted to implement familiar mechanics, but at the same time retain what made Gaiden what it was. But a major focus was reducing the difficulty level from the original to make it something more like what new fans could look forward to. But of course we are not just focusing on the new players, but those who also had played this game in the past.

Q: And in addition to that, the visuals have evolved quite a bit with Fates, and yet in this game they retain a sort of nostalgic charm to them.

Higuchi: The weapon triangle as we know it in the series started in Genealogy of the Holy War, so Gaiden lacked it. Weapons had few unique characteristics, and terrain was very important in influencing the outcome of a battle. We had to seriously take these factors into consideration this time around. Some may find these features nostalgic, while others will find them brand new. We have seen both reactions from our in-house test players.

Kusakihara: The mechanics and such in Fates are rather complicated, so we wanted to return to more simplistic gameplay in a way. It became very user-friendly, and at the core retains the essence it had all those years ago.

Higuchi: We are incredibly thankful that more people took notice of this series through these methods. We have dropped the notion of “A Fire Emblem game must be like this” when approaching new titles, which allows people to always experience something new. It is also a challenge to inevitably face every time it comes to picking up an older title. With a card game and smart phone title, Fire Emblem no longer has just one way to play.

Q: Lastly, Mr. Yamagami, please say some a few final words for the readers.

Yamagami: A few final words… “Buy these games without worries!” Does that work? (Laughs). We have already begun development on a new title for the Switch, and so I think this is probably the last Fire Emblem game on the 3DS. There’s still a bit of time before I can share news for the Switch title, so please enjoy Echoes –a culmination of all the 3DS Fire Emblem games –until then. I want to be ready to talk about the Switch game by the time the customers can safely respond with, “But I’ve already played the game…”

New Mystery Female-Only Playthrough

Chapter 9: Sanctuary of Sorcery

We escape to Khadein, a city of magic in the middle of the desert. Gotoh founded the school but said fuck it when people use it for war. Also, he made Aura and some special magic for the chosen one. Let's go back to school again.

Marth tells Kris that her luck sucks.

On the barracks, Caeda gets Skl and Def boost, Ogma gets support, Matthis gets Laundry Pole, Radds get Cleave Bow.

On talks, Khadein is in desert and mage can walk better in the desert, for some reason. Recap of what happened on previous chapter: Hardin gets a villain plot-armor macguffin, and Marth gets 2nd convo with Kris and Caeda.

Funny you mention about the drill grounds in your 2nd convo with Kris, Marth, because you are going there. Goddamn, do these drill grounds not being kind to Marth. He got Str, Skl, Lck, and Def.

Reset #7: I misclicked and got Marth killed in the drill grounds. That's the silliest death that happened in the playthrough. LOL.

Reset #8: I didn't check the numbers and got Marth killed against a Myrmidon in the drill grounds. Thankfully, I saved.

Reset #9: Third time in the row, I misclicked.

Reset #10: Caeda challenged the arena and it was a Knight. Good thing I saved earlier because I wasn't even going to give up.

Reset #11: Seriously, another Knight? WTF, game.

Reset #12: It was a Dark Mage against Cecil. Tried to get her to level up.

Reset #13: Caeda versus Mercenary.

Reset #14: ffs game, having Cecil fight a Knight.

When it comes to sortee, I gave Norne both Scorpio and Leo for more strength and speed.

On to the chapter, oh hey, Michalis. Dropping off Minerva in a village nearby? We should see her soon.

A house said that Swordslayer are strong against mercenaries, a guy named Arlen, and a warning to buy as much as you could because there won't be any shops in Anri's Way.

The thief had a nifty Thief staff, which will come in handy in the next chapter. Another had another Master Seal.

The mages and Etzel are moving in. I had Marth be covered with a Barrier to recruit him and expect to tank the mages. Thankfully, nothing terrible happened.

Caeda got a no-stat level up. Wow.

Marth got the treasure which has Boots and a Capricorn orb.

Norne took on the boss and beat him.

With a savepoint nearby, I took the time to use the arena before Astram come and screw us over. And on Turn 9, he's here.

Finally, Marth reached the village and got Minerva. Too bad she wasn't here for the entire chapter, otherwise, I would have used her. At least she comes with Virgo.

Yuliya rescued Marth and after the enemy phase, we end the chapter. Also, those Heroes were going after Phina. We have 10 out of 12 shards, 2 more to go.

[up] It is designed to be pretty difficult. Not as difficult as Lunatic+, mind, but some of the chapters do verge into that territory. The skill sets and stats of the enemy demand a fairly safe, MMO-ish "you're a raid of squishies pulling elites" kind of mindset.

[up][up] Freak hits and crits happen. I've been hit by so many 1-3% crits that I'm very paranoid about either reducing the enemy listed crit to 0 or having enough to HP to just plain tank it, if I can help it.

[up]x4 Lunatic+ is a mode that Awakening has. It basically takes vanilla Lunatic's high-stat enemies and adds two high-powered abiilties to each of them, almost all of which are made to kill a pet strategy and force the player to respond adaptively (stuff like Nostanking and Galeforce still break all of it in general, though).

The pool prior to C3 contains:

  • Luna+ - A Luna skill that always activates. Probably the most threatening early on because no one has good evasion, which is the counter to this and Fred loses a ton of tank if he needs to duel anyone with this.
  • Hawkeye - Enemies always have 100% displayed hit. Hilariously inconsequential early on for the same reason that Luna+ is threatening. No one has good evasion, so they were pretty much gonna get hit anyway. High concrete defenses eventually make this skill be useless for the enemy unless it also has a proc. There's a special exception for this with late-game Berserkers, who run around with a whopping 79 Atk, which is scary as hell even without a proc.
  • Vantage+ - Enemy always goes first when initiated on. Sometimes it comes into play, but as Awakening is very have on enemy phase and thus emphasizes having 1~2 range, it's generally no big deal. It's especially questionable early on because the enemies' high stats mean that not kiting is often suicide, anyway.
  • Pass - Same as the standard Assassin skill. Mostly messes up a few key choke points, but is otherwise a wasted skill slot for them.

C3 then takes the previous pool and adds:

  • Pavise+ - Always halves damage from swords, lances, axes and beaststones. Kinda sucky to face early on because the player doesn't get a lot of units that can work around this and supports aren't up and running yet. Dual Strikes crap all over this skill, though, so once S-rank happens, it becomes kind of irrelevant.
  • Aegis+ - Always halves damage from tomes, bows and dragonstones. More annoying because tomes are the best 1~2-range weapon in the game. Dual Strikes still wreck it, though. It's also somewhat less impactful early on because the units affected by Aegis can still chip the enemy, then have Fred ride in and impale the guy on his Silver Lance's massive Atk.
  • Counter - Same as the Warrior skill. Probably the worst-implemented skill in the set. It seems to be meant to discourage the player from leaning too heavily on super units by making them potentially do massive damage to themselves. Problem is, the reflected damage ends up screwing over low-level units even harder. The end result is that it instead encourages a few super units with highly specialized skill sets.

This has probably been brought up before, but I was watching Big Klingy's LP of Awakening, and he came up with a good head canon that I accept.

Before Grima took over, Panne and Schrodinger had many children, like real rabbits, but they all died except for Yarne (And potentially Morgan), and that's why he's so cowardly.

New Mystery Female-Only Playthrough

Chapter 10: The Two Mages

Back to school, School of Khadein. The place used to have many pontifex, but you know, Gharnef and shit happened. Wendell was in charge but did shit so Merric and Arlen is in charge.

Kris is dumb. Does intelligence = magic in this series?

In barracks, Caeda gets support, Ryan gets useless boost, Navarre gets useless boost, Barst get useless boost.

On talks, Wendell want a lecture with Arlen, Khadein is fighting us again, Kris has 3rd convo with Marisha, Catria, and Caeda. Kris has 2nd convo with Yuliya and 1st convo with Phina. We got Luck, Speed, and another Luck Bond from the convos.

On the drill grounds, Marth is seriously cannot compete in these arenas. The enemy are too strong and Marth is too weak at this point. Maybe this whole not using Marth thing and having him trained just for the final boss might be a mistake. Also, I'm running a bit out of money. Maybe... He got HP, Str, Spd, and Def. I realized that I should have sold my Rapier for a long time since it's worthless in this playthrough and there's no Lucina.

I could only bring 12 units and I need Wendell for this one. Sorry Minerva, you'll get your spotlight in... maybe the next chapter.

Reset #15: Palla died to a Shaver crit. Her luck is too low against them.

On to the chapter, the first thing I did was rescue Merric with my last Rescue staff uses. Then, Catria and Caeda killed the Swarm Bishops after getting a Barrier resistance, since there are Shaver Mages nearby.

With the new Thief staff, I had Marisha used one on the border of the map, one holding a Silence staff and the other holding an Unlock staff.

Other than the initial strat, the chapter wasn't that hard. Send two groups to the two halves, Caeda, Norne, Linde, Marisha, Marth, Merric and Wendell in the left half with the rest at the other half.

The mercenaries with the Killing Edge is really putting me in the edge as well.

A bunch of clerics around but I can't kill them as I get a reward in the end.

When attracting the Sniper, I gave Norne the Libra shard just so she doesn't get 2 crit by the Sniper. She doubled and killed him with

I made a save because I have to deal with that one Shaver mage that I wasn't able to kill. I barriered Linde and she took him out.

After Caeda took care of the Mercenary with a Silver Sword, with the help of Phina, Wendell smacked Arlen for his whining. We also got the Aries which gives 1 skill and luck.

After getting the other chests which contained a Physic and Large Bullion, we end the chapter. For sparing the clerics, we got a Silver Card, nice for shopping.

Oh hi Gotoh, you want us to come to your house in the middle of the mountains where the pathway is filled with barbarians and dragons just to get the only thing to defeat Hardin? Sure, we could do that. But, before we do...

Jagen congratulates us for not killing anyone. Also, hi Malice and Dice, you're here too. Especially you Malice. Also, side quest.
